Happy Holidays and Thnks to All

I wsih everyone a joyus holiday season and hope your 2008 is a good year... 2007 was one of the best years my wife and I have had and we look so forward to next year and spending more time with our famlies and friends... We pray for everyone in our lives that they find joy, happiness and serenity and that they find something productive to involve themselves in and outside of their everyday lives...

This year we welcomed a new niece into our family and a new brother in law to our family... We took a wonderful trip to Paris in the fall and are in the final stages of getting our house back together from our remodeling projects... We attended many Louisville Bats Games, UK Wildcat Basketball Games and all but one of the UK football home games... We are thankful for the people and the level of activity that we have in our lives...

The Mitchell Report and Baseball

This is an interesting document... My understanding is that every one of the players named in the report was given the chance to speak to Senator Mitchell about what evidence he had gathered against them and on the advice of the union leadership the players all refused... I do not blame them because if you have no legal obligation on an issue where one might have broken the law then why take the chance on incremenating themselves and saying something that could be used against them in any type of legal proceeding...

The bottom line to all of this is the Owners, the Union, the Players and the Commissioners Office all knew what was going on with steroids but refused to do anything about it until it had gotten completly out of control... How do they now move forward??? Will Roger Clemons be outcast like Mark McGwire or attacked in the same manner as Barry Bonds??? There is nothing that Bud Selig can do except resign and let someone else get baseball out of this mess and allow the sport to move forward with the damage that has already been done... Bud is too arrogant to do that!!!

The question I have is how will these events be viewed 100 years from now??? Medical science is making such strides in the development of medicines and supplements that I could see at some point in the future their will be substances that will be safe and legal to take and people will look back on this time period and say what was the big deal???

I Hope We Keep it Close

I really got tired of hearing that the week leading up to the UK vs UNC basketball game... When did keeping it close become acceptable at UK??? I never go into a game with any level of acceptance for keeping it close... I want to win every time (but I am not crazy enough to expect a win every time)... Should keeping it close be a new category with W's, L's and now KIC's... So Kentucky is something like 5-2-2 right now!!!

I think that the mind set of keeping it close it due to the medias and some fans perception that this team lacks talent and cupboard was left a little bare (it is a little bare on the front line)... This team would be a different team of Jodie Meeks and Derrick Jasper were healthy... They lack some inside presence but look at Ricky P's early teams and he was able to overcome that presence by playing a faster more aggressive tempo... Billy G is trying to do the same...

Kentucky's issue is no point guard... They have no one to start the offense through someone and Ramel looks like Tony Delk trying to play the point... "Just Go to the Hole Joe" sucks and he really gets in trouble when he trys to be the start of the offense... Michael Porter is JP Blevins part 2 and Alex Legion, do not let the door hit you in the ass, could not play the point... Jasper may be back next month... His injury is similar to Greg Odens which according to everything I have read about this injury could be a career ending type of the quotes I read were "never was the same player" after the surgery...

I would have to say that after the IU game Joe Crawford is my least favorite of all time at UK… He has topped a list of such noteables as Roderick Rhodes, Todd May, Jim Master, Derrick Hord, Rashard Carruth and Marvin Stone… Joe Crawford is the most selfish basketball player I have ever seen at Kentucky and he proved this once again when he failed to pass the ball to a wide open Mark Coury who was standing underneath the basket after they had made a nice defensive play and stole the ball from Joe’s brother during Saturday’s contest with IU…

Tubby should have let “Take it to the Hole Joe” transfer during his freshmen year when he abrubtly left the team during his early freshmen season… I am sure most UK fans would agree and I am sure that Billy G in the back of his mind wishes Tubby would have let him go also so he had one less head case to deal with… So Billy G let Alex Legion go… He is not worth the trouble and will only cause you problems down the rode (See Joe Crawford)…

The talent level is so low UK right now (See Mark Coury as a starter) that if Billy G cannot keep Patrick Patterson in school for three years then I give him a 50 50 chance to make it past five years as UK coach… There is no doubt this guy can coach but he may have walked into a situation that just will not fit and that is unfourtunate for him and UK…

These could be some dark days for UK the next few years… Talent is down, Rupp Arena is a hole, there are plenty of empty seats in the arena at most games (you never saw that before), the crowds are flat and the enthusiasm level in general seems to be down with the fans…

Rumors are still flying that Billy G is in need of a twelve step program but until I see it for myself or see video evidence on You Tube then I am chalking this all up to rumors… This team will struggle to win 10 games this year… I have tickets to five different games after the first of the year and I am pretty non committal at this point if I am going to go to any of the games except for the Arkansas game...

Let's all be big John Pelphrey fans and hope is does great at Arkansas!!! We may need him to step in four or five years...

UK Football Season

In seventeen years at Oregon Rick Brooks career winning percentage was less than .500 ... If you throw out his fist ten years there he was barely .500... He won eight or more games three times (nine games once) and the rest of the years never won above six games in any one season... With that said I believe if you cannot not win eight games at UK during the regular season with this years team then you cannot win eight games at Kentucky... This was a special group of seniors and players that Kentucky had this year... The kind of special class that does not come often at Kentucky and the type of class that you have to realize their oppurtunity and win eight games...

Rich is obviously great guy with a great level of integrity and charecter and the accolades place on him by Oregon (Sports Hall of Fame and the Field is named after him)... After the decimating probation the Kentucky went through Rich spent three years trying to build a program at UK from the ground up and has succeeded the last two years with getting UK to back to back bowl games which is new ground and a first step for Kentucky...

So here we are in new uncharted territory and in better shape then our football program has been probably ever... I believe Rick Brooks will coach at UK the next three years... These three years will determine his legacy at UK... Can he win eight games in any of the next three years??? How will he coach and how will his team respond losing this years senior class??? What happens is Randy Sanders or Joker Phillps leaves???

I have said it once and I will say it again... All I ask for as a fan is for UK football to be competitive year in and year out, have a team every three to four years who can compete for an SEC title (this years team qualfied)... I want one of those teams to acutally win one of those titles or at least play for one in Atlanta... Rich is here for the next three years unless he decides to leave we will see what he can do... I think his best shot at winning eight games was this past year...

See you in Nashville at the Music City Bowl...

Navy Midshipmen Football

The Middies had a great year... They finished 8 and 4 and had a nice win over a bad Notre Dame squad... They also beat USAF and Army for the fifth year in a row to take home the commander and chief trophy...

I have really grown to love Navy Football and allot of it has to do with the effort and of course my tie in being a veteran... They play old style football and I am a fan of that style... Despite what people say they are not running the wishbone (Lou Holtz included)...

The middies played a great game in the bowl and if you did not watch this game you missed a good hard hitting football game... Navy had two huge turnovers in the first quarter that proved to be big plays in the game... Navy was also on the wrong side of a bad call late in the game that had the call gone the right way may have changed the outcome...

Utah's inside the five yard line and on 3rd and goal ran a sweep and as the Utah player stretched to put the ball over the goal line hit the pylon and then rolled out of bounce... By rule this is a touchback, Navy ball at the twenty... The play was reviewed and the booth said Utah ball fourth and goal at the one... After the game the official admitted they made a mistake...

Navy then stopped Utah on 4th and goal which was huge... Unfourtunatly they ran four plays and failed to get a first down... Utah then scored but........ Navy almost ran the kick back and then scored on the second play from scrimmage... Navy then got the ball on the onside kick but on the second play was intercepted, game over... That is two years in a row they should/could have won their bowl game...

Navy of course now has a new coach who coached his first game at the bowl game... He was the O line coach their and was able to retain several of the existing assistant coaches... I hoep the school can continue to be successful...

Private Schools in Kentucky

There were five private schools in this years Kentucky Football State Championships... The games that Trinity and St X played in the state playoffs to get to the 6A State Fianls were not even competitive... The problem of competivness lies in the shear number of players these schools have on their rosters which is a result of more kids going to private schools in Jefferson County due to the quality of education they can reeieve at private schools...

There is a reason that so many kids are going to private schools in Louisville which does not speak highly of the Jefferson County School System... I am not sure if the private schools should be removed from the KHSAA when part of the problem with their dominance lies in the less then appealing nature of the Jefferson County Schools... If more kids went to public schools in Jefferson County then the talent would be spread around more which would spread the talent around better and give the public schools in Jefferson County and the rest of the state the oppurtunity to compete with the Private Schools at the 6A level....

Every politician in the state has talked about improving the educational systems in our state and nothing ever happens... The lottery was going to do it and where is that money now and what is it doing for education??? Now the latest scheme is to allow casiono gambling in the state so the state can spend more money on education and whatever else it is they spend money on... What a con job and people will buy it hook, line and sinker... Nothing will change and the private schools will continue to get stronger in both academics and sports... This will eventually lead to the private schools being booted out of the state tournaments in all sports... A move I was once for but now I am not so sure about...

Bowl Games

The NCAA has to figure out a way to incorporate and eight team playoff into the bowl format... This years eight teams would consist of the following first round games if I were picking:

Hawaii at USC

Georgia at Ohio State

Missouri at LSU

Va Tech at Oklahoma

Winners play New Years Day and the Championship is the second Saturday after New Years Day at a predetermined site each year... To accomplish all of this teams may have to cut back to playing eleven regular season games and hold conference championship games the Friday and Saturdays after Thanksgiving... Probably will never happen because of the dollars...

Random Thoughts

- Congrats to Kevin Newman and Craig Glick on winning the annual Thanksgiving Day Classic Two Man Scramble... The boys played solid golf the entire nine holes and were crowned champs after the final two groups both three putted the last hole... They caved to the pressure!!!

- For my college football pick'em on Yahoo I finished 10th in Fans of Kentucky, 20th in Fans from Kentucky, 2nd in Fans of Navy and 1300th overall... That put me in the top 1%... Let's see how I do in the College Bowl Pick'em... My nephew Matt won the ShagOnSports league (he is twelve)... I finished in fifth place in my first year of Fantasy Football wnning seven of my last eight games...

- Bobby Petrino... What a loser!!! This guy is setting himself up for a fall... I am not sure how he could do what he did to the Falcons... If I were a parent I would not let my son play for this guy... Gurantee Arkansas is not his last stop... I met him in Lexington his first year at U of L in the Hyatt and tried to be friendly and cordial to him but he refused to even engage me in conversation and there was no one else even around... I could tell then he was a little arrogant...

- St Louis Cardinals are in a tough spot with Scott Rolen... If they trade him and have to pay more than 40% of his salary then they should just keep him... A 270 avg 15 HR 70 RBI gold glove Scott Rolen is better than they could probably get in return... I am glad they traded Jim Edmonds and got something in return... Frees up some money to sign another outfielder...

- I was glad to see Navy coach Paul Johnson get a shot at a next level Division One program... He should do well at Georgia Tech running the triple option... He will no doubt throw the ball more there... Unlike the wishbone the triple option is very deceptive and has allot of passing plays built in... It is a one back set with usually five receivers in the pattern (two wings and two receivers)...

- Does Rick Pitino ever tell the truth anymore... I love tricky Rick but I will tell you one thing he is all about Rick... Just look at what is going on with the Charecter charecter... U of L has the talent to take the whole thing without this guy and now that Palacios is back and Padgett is coming back it will be interesting to see what happens to Charecter... Rick seems to be on a short leash with some of the U of L fan base so it will be interesting how everything plays out this year and next...

Kentcuky Football - Same Old Story

New Niece
My sister Rhonda and her husband Kevin welcomed their new daughter into the world last week, Annaleigh Eliza-Beth Richard... She is an absolute doll who we are looking to spoil over the next many years... Miss America 2027 is my prediction!!!

Disappointing Football Team at UK
My wife and I attended are first true road game at Vandy... We me two-thirds of our tailgating crew there the morning of the game...
What a great town Nashville has turned into... The developments around the Vandy campus and the development of the downtown area is incrediable... That day Vandy had a football game, a basketball game, the Predators were playing hockey and the Titans had a home game the next day... That place was rocking!!!
Vandy is a great place to watch a game but the facility below is really sad... I am guessing that is why UK fans had Vandy so outnumbered... Vandy fans just do not come out...
If you have never been to a game there or to a basketball game there then I recommend you go... If you like Bar-B-Q then there is a little shack (I mean shack) in the park that has the Parthenon, behind the MacDonald's that is across the street from the Holiday Inn that is fantastic... I have eaten their for years... Give it a try...
Kentucky looked sick against Vandy... Had Vandy not missed two field goals and an extra point UK would have lost... Lose to Vandy and the season was a huge disaster and pretty much over... I probably would have skipped the Tennessee game had UK lost down there in an act of defiance... Which brings me to my next point...
Let's all recite The Wolf Line from the scene "The Bonnie Situation"!!! If you don't know it go rent the movie...
I ain't drinking the kool-aid... Rich Brooks is proving to me the last four games why after his first 10 years at Oregon he had a losing record the next 10 (he had a losing record the first ten also but he gets a pass)... This team is pathetic, they are not ready to play, the special teams are awful, the defense is getting gapped like an over matched high school team and is being applauded this week for only giving up 99 yards passing to Georgia... Could that be because they were running the ball down our freaking throats... The LSU game is over guys so get over it...

Lose to Tennessee and in my book means this team has underachieved... Brooksy says that this is the most successful Kentucky football season since 1977 and I ain't buying that one either... As of right now this team is Hal Mumme mediocre... Get off your asses and beat Tennessee then we can talk about success!!! Yes I am a very frustrated football fan because when this team started 5 and 0 there is no way they should not have won at least eight games to this point... I ain't accepting this season as a step forward until we beat Tennessee...

Andre Woodson has turned into a big wussy not a Heisman Trophy contender... Two weeks in a row when he could put his head down and make a big first down and he has pranced his way into a soft tackle and this week goes out of bounds... He took a fourth quarter sack that he took vs throwing the ball away cost the team a field goal which is a freshmen play not a fifth year senior play... In my opinion the kid has quit playing, scared to get hit or hurt and focusing on his potential pay day in the NFL... It is unbelievable to me that this kid could just quit playing after the Florida game and that the coaching staff would allow this to happen... Andre is showing me that he is now all about Andre and the hype... Guess what dude their is no Andrea hype so get over yourself and play football.. Brooks excuse for Andrea on Saturday was there was wind on the field... How laughable is that!!!

Come on Rich have you relaxed and are just accepting where you are??? Injuries and schedule are not an excuse!!! Let's get this team over the hump... Your marquee win over LSU does not mean squat at this point so the team and the coaching staff need to get over it... You always down play Mumme and Morris's regular season achievements but you have not won more the seven games in the regular season yet buddy...
Hey Rich!!!

- Why is Burton returning kicks???

- Why is Little returning punts???

- Why is Derrick Locke not getting more carries??? Joker said after the game he should have given Locke more carries after UK's 29 carries for 29 yards...

- Why is the fullbacks never in the game anymore when these guys were opening huge holes during the first give games???

- Why is Alfonso Smith not getting any touches???

You can call me an arm chair quarterback if you want but I am in the stands week in and week out and calling like I see it and I call this team and coaching staff out... Beat Tennessee and you have had a successful season to this point... Lose to Tennessee and I guess I will see you at the Liberty Bowl... I want a win and trip to either the Peach or Outback Bowl...

My grades are a B minus for Brooksy, B minus for Joker (but falling fast) and C for Steve Brown... Joker is so predictable in his play calling and Steve Brown is outmatched... Why would he not put seven men on the line of scrimmage yesterday and make Gerogia beat you throwing the ball... How did you let Sylvester Croom whup up on your head???

It is only one game but 8 and 4 and a trip to the Peach or Outback would make a great year where 7 and 5 is mediocre... A win in the Peach or Outback would be outstanding... As I said earlier in the year I do not see this team as mediocre but that is where they are today...

Middies Rule

Navy leads the nation in rushing, has a top ten total offense but is 115th in total defense... In two weeks if they beat Army then they will finish 8 and 4 and are headed to the Poinsettia Bowl...
If you have not watched this team play then you are missing watching a team give the ultimate effort which is what you get at the service academy schools... They are over matched almost every week but seem to be able to overcome it...
Go Navy!!! Beat Army!!!
ShagOnSports Top Five
1. Kansas
2. Missouri
3. LSU (they lost to Kentucky)
4. West Virginia
5. Ohio

I was on a conference call today with a group of people who live in Kansas City and are split right down the middle on Missouri and Kansas... It was fun to here them going at each other... One of these teams obviously falls this weekend...

Harvard and Yale met this past weekend for the Ivy League Title... It was the first time since 1968 that "The Game" was for the Ivy League Title... Harvard rolled over Yale big winning the title... The 1968 game ended in a 29 to 29 tie after Harvard scored 14 points in the final 90 seconds to tie the game... The headline on the Boston Sports Page read the next day "Harvard Beats Yale 29 to 29"...

Congrats to IU who will be going to a bowl game and beat Purdue this weekend...

Annual Thanksgiving Day Golf Classic

This Thursday will be a tradition like no other!!! The annual Thanksgiving Day Golf Classic hosted by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Henderson...

This years event is filled with some drama before it ever starts... We will be missing two of our regular players so we are pulling a former participant back into the fray and will be inducting a new member who has been on the waiting list for a few years...

This will be my first time playing golf since my surgery this summer but I still feel that my team has a chance to win because in a scramble skins format it could only take one hole to win the event... I am banking on that opportunity and think it will come this year on the sixth hole of the day (#16 at players club in Henderson as we are starting on #11 there)... A par on this hole could go along way for sure... I will be saving my swings for this hole...

Just looking forward to getting back out on the course and enjoying some fellowship with my friends before our Thanksgiving Family Feast... Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday due to the fellowship I get with my family and friends...

Random Thoughts

- I do not read much into Billy G not signing his contract yet... I do read some things into the Garnder Webb loss but the team has an opportunity next week to start the season over... It is going to be a rough 2007 for this team and the schedule after the first of the year looks tough!!! To early for predictions... If I were Billy G I would play the young guys... He does not owe Bradley or Crawford anything...

- I do not care what you say the private schools in Kentucky have a huge advantage over the public schools in high school football due to the total number of players they put on the field... The games have almost no competitive interest even during the state playoffs (Look at the ridiculous scores last weekend)... Numbers only give you a big advantage in football because in baseball or basketball you are only playing nine and five at a time and not twenty-two... I would like to see the KHSAA go to a public school only playoff system which is what most other states have especially bigger cities... Private schools are great but they should not be included in the State Tournaments for Football in the State of Kentucky...

- Barry Bonds is getting what he deserves... I doubt he will be convicted but I hope his career is over... No one should think they are bigger then the game itself and Bond's obviously has that mentality... Bonds is a Hall of Famer because of his early career numbers but I am not sure that he ever gets in... I used to think I would vote for Pete Rose to get in but now I would not so I need some more time on Bonds...

- A Rod looks to be signing a 275 million dollar contract for ten years with the Yankees... If he hits 30 home runs a year the next ten years he will crush Barry Bonds Home Run Record... I am glad to see A Rod thumb his nose at his agent as agents, especially Scott Boras, are ruining pro sports... The players deserve allot of money but they need to take care of the future of the game like the players did before them... Pro Sports will not survive at it's current pace... All of the leagues will be there in the future but a some point the leagues will shrink... It will take some years for this to occur but without some major changes it will happen...

- My buddy and UK Football Super Fan CT's streak of games attending games ended this weekend... CT had been to every game until the Georgia game... Nice run CT!!! Next year we are targeting the Mississippi State game as our road game we are going to attend...

- There is a great documentary on HBO about the Michigan and Ohio State Football Rivalry... I am not a fan of either team but I will admit this is probably the greatest rivalry in Sports... They have been playing this game longer than the World Series has been in existence or longer then the NFL has been around...

- How do you get an Ohio State Fan off your porch, Pay him for the Pizza... There is an Ohio State Fan and Michigan Fan in third grade which one is bigger??? The Michigan Fan because he is 15 years old... A Michigan Fan left school and transferred to Ohio State and raised the grade point averages at both schools...

- Eight for eight this week in my college pick'em... Puts me at 60% for the year...

- Tim Tebow wins the Heisman... He has my vote for sure...

- Rumors are flying the Steve Kragthorpe is going to leave U of L for SMU... Also hearing that there are some U of L players part of an investigation into possible point shaving...

ShagOnMusic

Watched a great show on A & E this weekend with the band Heart... They played live and sounded better now then they did many years ago... Ann Wilson has a new solo record out where she covers allot of songs and of course she does a Zepplin song and did that one on the show...

Welcome to the SEC

My wife and I spent two weeks in Europe at the beginning of October... We flew to Paris on October 7th and was there for four days and five nights before taking a train to Germany to spend five days and attend my sister's wedding... Yes this means I missed the LSU game but the trip was well worth this sacrifice...

Paris is a wonderful city and the area that my sister lives in Germany is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been too... The village we stayed in Germany was over 2000 years old!!!

My sisters wedding was a really beautiful ceremony and the reception afterwards was one of the best wedding receptions I have ever been too... I am working on a trip summary for a future blog that will detail the trip... We took over 700 pictures while we were there so the visit is well documented...

Welcome the SEC

What a ride...

Here is what I wrote at the start of the year...

"Old Brooksy just may have Kentucky on the right path… As I stated he needs to have at a minimum had a repeat of last year… They need to beat EKU, Mississippi State, Florida International (watch out for Howard) and Kent State and then win three out of the four with Arkansas, South Carolina, Vandy and Louisville… This team has confidence and confidence can be a great thing or a dangerous thing which could lead to some marquee upsets…"

So they are about where I expected them to be at this point... With that said I am bit disappointed because this team should be seven and two... The pulled the marquee upset and then cancelled it out by losing to Mississippi State... I need to see two of the last three as wins...

The SEC is a great football conference and I am happy to see the success of all the teams this year...

UK vs South Carolina

This is no doubt a game that UK should have won!!! They are better then South Carolina... You cannot beat any team when you have four turnovers especially when two of them are returned for touchdowns... Woodson had a bad game but still had UK in the game in the 4th quarter... I thought that two of the turnovers in the game were the result of bad play calling when UK was ready to score and should have ran the ball down USC's throat vs trying to throw the ball around...

I did not like Joker's play calling in this game at all!!! This was a game that UK should have ran the ball down South Carolina's throat (much like Arkansas did this past weekend)... South Carolina has one of the best pass defenses in the country and allot of that is due to the fact their run defense is terrible... UK had three healthy backs in this game and should have utilized all three... Bad, bad game plan!!!
The defense played another good game in the second half but at times were picked apart by Steve Superior... I do not care for Superior (not to many opposing coaches I like any way) but this guy is one hell of a coach and he handed the UK coaching staff their jocks... Spurrier won an ACC Championship at Duke (this was of course an ACC with no FSU) and had some great teams at UF but in my opinion may have over coached a bit at UF... I am not sure he will have the same level of success at South Carolina he had at Florida but he continues to dominate UK...

UK vs LSU

What can you say??? This was not a game that I thought UK could win and they proved me way wrong... I felt this team at the beginning of the year could beat anyone and play with anyone but I thought that LSU's team speed and size would wear UK down...

Woodson had his best game as a Wildcat and the defense stepped up when they needed to... I thought that LSU looked worn down at the end of the game and the UK players looked fresh... Derrick Locke played a great game and he wore the LSU defense down...

Although we were not there we were certainly there in spirit and via the text meassages during the game... When we got the text they were in OT I was pretty much beside myself and then when we got the one that they won it was a surreal moment and the second celebration was on...

UK Vs Florida

This was an opportunity for this team to make a statement... ESPN's game day was on site in Lexington and the game was on national TV...

The tailgate before the game was electric (we had forty plus in attendance that day alone), The Cat Walk was exciting, the ESPN Game Day crowd was out in full force and made a great showing (my wife and nephew Matt were part of that crowd)...

This game was made even tougher for UK because of where it fell in the schedule... I am not sure that there is any team in the Country that play, much less beat LSU one week and then come back a week later to play and beat Florida... Factor in Florida's spread offense, UK defense struggles against this type of offense historically, and Florida's team speed then I knew UK was in for almost impossible battle...

Kentucky struck first with a nice toss from Andre Woodson to Dicky Lyons and the stadium went absolutely crazy which I am guess were shades of what it sounded like for the LSU game... Florida then marched right down the field and scored and before you knew it we were in the third quarter and Florida was up 24 to 10

At this point I told my buddies Wayne and Brad that we would see now what the Kentucky team had in their guts as they looked like they were out of gas... The Cats did make a nice come back to outscore Florida 20 to 18 (the last touchdown does not count in my book as it was meaningless) but in the end was just out of gas which brings me to my next point... How could the SEC schedule Kentucky to play LSU and Florida back to back???

As for the rest of the game I personally did not like the on side kick call in the 3rd quarter or the last kick off when Kentucky should have kicked it deep vs. giving Florida the ball on their own 40 on a squib kick (if you were going to on side kick do it there)... Woodson missed some open receivers but overall had a good day... The Cats no doubt missed Little in this game...

I have said all along that I think reality is that Kentucky can be an extremly competitive football team in the SEC year in and year out... I think that Kentucky can every three or four years have a chance to compete for an SEC East Title but when you look at their year in and year out schedule and the ever present talent gap due to recruiting between Kentucky and the Florida's, LSU's, Alabama's, Auburns, Georgia's and Tennessee's will make it even tough in a year when all the pieces are in place as they are this year...

By the way Florida upset UK according to ESPN...

UK vs Mississippi State

This was a game that I was concerned about since UK had so many injuries and was coming off of three very emotional games... Win this game, get a week off win two of the last three and this team is in a New Years Day bowl game for sure and quite possibly in the SEC Championship Game... Lay an egg and the team is in a fight for it's post season life... Egg layed and LSU win now means nothing!!!

I did not like the play calling in this game on offense... With the injuries I thought UK would run, run, run with the fullbacks leading the charge (Hey Joker do you remember the fullbacks that played so well through the first of the season???) and with Locke, Smith and Ginter all three getting carries throughout the game... Great teams overcome injuries and great coaching staffs devise game plans around the talent they have at that moment to win these types of games... Injuries, turnovers and not being ready to play killed this teams momentum...

They say that their are five plays during a game that will decide a game and Kentucky was one of five on these plays that I identified... The one was on a fourth and eight when Woodson through a strike to Stevie in the corner on a great throw and great catch...

I thought the Mississippi State coaching staff had a great game plan that was executed very well... Their opening drive was a thing of beauty and pretty much set the tone for the rest of the game and left the UK defense on their heels the rest of the way... Mississippi State is the last rated passing team in the SEC and we made there quarterback look like he was All Conference...

After the game I was happy to hear Papaw step up and take the blame for this loss as I think he is correct on pinning this one on himself and his staff... Injuries, sminjuries, You have to overcome them if you want to be successful in this league...

Can this team win the last three or two of three??? If they win only one and finish 7 and 5 would that make the season a disappointment??? Would you say the team under achieved if it goes 7 and 5??? Stay tuned... I will be in Nashville Saturday to root them on!!!

Fantasy Sports Update

This is my first year playing fantasy pro football... I thought this would force me to be more interested in the games... No luck... I still cannot follow it... My team is 2 and 7 but I will keep fighting...

In College Football Pick'em (against the spread) I started out on top... After four weeks I was First in Fans of Kentucky, First in Fans from Kentucky, tenth overall on Yahoo and first in my ShagOnFootball Pick Group...

The next five weeks were tough... I dropped out of the top 100 on both of my Fans Group, third place in ShagOnFootball and to about 5000 place overall on Yahoo... This week I went 13 and 4 which moves me back in the top 50 in both of my fan groups and to 2500 place overall on Yahoo and second in ShagOnFootball... If I were betting $10 a game then I would be up $260 as I am 106 and 80 for the year or 57% which is what I finished at last year... Four weeks to go...

UK Basketball

I am not putting allot of stock in the loss to Garnder-Webb... I think Billy G threw the game in the tank... During the second half I could see directly into the huddle during timeouts and Billy G was laughing at his players and during one timeout even tried to hand the players his clipboard as if to say, "You guys coach"...

I think he sent a message to this team that I let you do it your way and you got hammered and now we are going to do it my way...

UK's issue is they have no point guard and no help for Patrick Patterson who is not only a good offensive player but a great interior passer and pretty good defender... He just does not have anyone to throw the ball too...

This teams needs to shed Joe Crawford and Smooth Bradley (these guys are scarred) and let the young guys play but without Bradley no one can play the point (Jasper is done for the year)...

Biggest problem I have is that it is now confirmed that Billy G is partying like a rock star... I don't know about you but this is not what I want my coaches doing during their off time... Everyone should have a good time but let's do it with charecter and integrity...

Bottom line for me is I am a huge Arkansas fan for the moment except for when they play UK... If John Pelphrey can be successful there then he will be the next UK coach... Let's hope that is not in the next few years but with many more losses to teams like Gardner-Webb it may be sooner then we think...

Random Thoughts

- UK's defense ranks last in the SEC even though they are much improved... Defense, not offense wins championships... I am not sure UK can ever have a top rated defense and I would much rather have an entertaining point scoring machine as I think that is how you win football games consistently at UK...

- Florida had beaten Georgia several years in a row after coming off a bye week... This year Georgia was coming off a bye week and beat Florida... Hmmmmmmm!!!

- Did they play the World Series??? I guess my two weeks in Europe took me right out of the picture... I did not watch one inning of any of the playoff games and only watched two innings of the World Series... If the Games were on at a decent time during the week and if they played day games on the weekends like they should then I would probably watch more when my team is not playing... Congrats to the Red Sox, as they were the best team most all year (second only to Yankees in payroll)!!!

- Brooks meter stays at +6 after going 1 and 3 over the last four games... I thought this team could be 6 and 3 at this point and with some luck 7 and 2... After they beat both Louisville and Arkansas I expected this team to be 7 and 2... I still am not drinking the kool-aid until I see the body of work the rest of this year and next...

- They were giving out stickers at the game a few weeks ago that said "Brooks For Govenor 07, He's got my vote"... Pretty good turn around for Rich with the fans but then there is the Mississippi State meltdown...
- The officials blew the fair catch call in the U of L vs UConn game a few weeks ago... If replay is meant to get calls right then why would that call not be reviewable... U of L still had a ten point lead in the 4th quarter and should have won... U of L can win two of their last three and salvage their season!!!

- When I look at Tony Larussa's record in St Louis it makes me feel like signing him for two more years is a good idea... Much better then the Reds hiring Dusty Baker... That was a bad hire for the Reds... Nice hire by the Yankees to get Girardi and time will tell if the Dodgers made a good hire with Torre...

- Kelvin Sampson... Can you hear me now???

- During our visit to Paris they were having the Rugby World Cup... My wife and I watched it on TV allot... It is an interesting game with lots of non stop action... My buddy CT played for UK when he was in college and he has explained the rules to me now where it makes sense... My favorite non American sport is still Australian Rules Football...
ShagOnMusic
We went to see Tori Amos the other night... She plays the piano, sometime two at once and has a wonderful voice... Our wedding song was Tori singing the Zepplin song Thank You... Tori's opening act was Yoav who played the guitar and does not have a record out yet... He was excellent...

Coach Papaw

The Books Meter

Rich Brooks is hired… Sporting News says it is the worst hire in college football history… Meter is at 0

Find out he is 61 years old and has not coached in three years… Meter is at -1

Talk to connections at NIKE (they are based in Oregon) and the overwhelming majority say he is a nice guy but the only reason he kept the Oregon job so long was because nobody else wanted it… Meter is at -2

I check Brooksy overall record at Oregon and even when you throw out his first eight years he has losing record… Meter is at -3

Find out he was the interim head coach and defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons when they went to the Super Bowl… Add two back so the meter is at -1

Remember my old boss loved Rich Brooks… Meter is at -2

Brooks says he looks forward to coaching in the “Southeast Conference”… Meter is at
-3

2004 Brooks looses his opening game to a Louisville team he should have easily beaten… Meter is at -4

2004 Brooks runs an offense that takes a team that should go to a bowl game and finishes 5 – 7… Meter is at -5

2004 Brooks has a disaster year in year two, loses to a MAC team and Vandy but his offensive coordinator resigns before the last game and UK almost beats Tennessee… Meter is at -7

2005 – I leave a game at half time for the first time in my life after Kentucky is down 49 to 7 to Florida… Meter is at -8

2005 – UK has a solid recruiting class (top 35)… Meter is at -7

2006 – Brooks looses the opening game to U of L… Badly!!! Meter is at -8

2006 – Team bounces back from the U of L loss but then looses 45 – 0 at LSU… Meter is at -9

2006 – UK upsets Georgia… Meter is at -7

2006 – UK becomes bowl eligible (by the skin of their teeth)… Meter is at -6

2006 – UK gets a bid to the Music City Bowl and upsets Clemson… Meter is at -4

2007 – Realize that the hiring of Randy Sanders is the reason that Andre Woodson had his turnaround/breakout year… Meter is at -3

2007 - Finally realize the impact of probation on the program… Meter is at -1

2007 – Mike Archer is gone… Meter is at 0

2007 – Appreciate the level of integrity and the resolve the Brooksy has showed during his embattled tenure… Meter is at +1

2007 – UK beats #9 Louisville in a game they should win… The meter is at +2

2007 – UK upsets Arkansas on the road scoring 21 unanswered and playing some great second half defense… UK is now ranked 14th and 15th… Meter is at +3

2007 – UK is 5 and 0 and ranked number eight in the country… Meter is at +5

I appreciate what Rich Brooks has done for the UK program and the level of integrity he has brought the University during his tenure… Was I wrong about my criticism of Brooksy??? More than somewhat!!!

What happened in year 1 to me was worse the some of the items from years 2 and 3 (probation killed this team in years 2 and 3)… I still think Brooksy came in very arrogant and had he stood beside former Offensive Coordinator Ron Hudson his stay at Kentucky would have been a short one…

At this point I will not drink the kool-aid until I see the entire body of work this year and next… As for what he has done from the LSU game last year through game four of this year I would rate him an A minus… Also don’t down play the significance of adding Randy Sanders to this staff… Without him I do not think this team is where they are today and Andre Woodson is not a Heismen Candidate… Can they hang on to Sanders???

Rich can score some major points in the next few weeks… Take care of business against Florida Atlantic (they did) and beat South Carolina on the road to go 6 and 0… Beat FAU and loose to USC they are 5 and 1… Pull a monumental upset of Florida or LSU, Wow… Will UK loose three of the next four to go 5 and 3 on the year???

All I know is the line from the character known as The Wolf in Pulp Fiction… If you don’t remember I have referenced it before and you should go back and watch the movie…

The players love Brooksy and I think the old man has spun the program around in the right direction… All I have ever asked for is a competitive football team and right now I think that UK has one… The next three games will be special ones…

UK Vs U of L

This was a game that I felt all year long that Kentucky should win and to be honest they should have won by more… Kentucky has a talented team with some of the best returning skill players in the country, depth and a defense that was much improved through the end of last year and the first two games of 2007…

Run the ball!!! In this game I think that Kentucky and U of L for that matter should have spent much more time running the football… Dixon should have gotten five to six more carries and between Smith and the fullbacks I think UK should have gotten five or six carries between them… After UK held U of L out of the end zone on fourth and goal this should have been Tony Dixon time… If Kentucky just runs the ball instead of three consecutive pass plays on the second set of downs on that drive then the game was over...

Joker still needs some work but he is getting there for sure… What the hell was the fourth and less then a yard option call in the first half??? How does a veteran coaching staff not go for two points after the last touchdown that with kicking the extra point only put you up six??? What is David Jones doing on the kick off team or on defense in the Arkansas game when he cannot even run (he is supposed to be the fastest guy on the team but is hampered by injuries)??? These kinds of mistakes and play calls will not beat Florida or LSU…

The key to the U of L game was obviously the two early turnovers by U of L, the early play of the UK defense in the first quarter and the second half, the poor play of the U of L defense during the game and UK’s ability to run the ball… UK made great adjustments at half time on both sides of the ball and was able to all but shut down the vaunted U of L offense… Good coaching staffs and good teams make these types of adjustments during games, especially at half time… Hats off to rookie defensive coordinator Steve Brown…

The fourth quarter to me was worth the price of admission… The UK defense stepped up and was helped on a late fourth quarter U of L drive by an illegal formation penalty… The UK defense only gave up one offensive touchdown in the second half against a great U of L offense… The crowd was awesome and that is why I attend the games to experience those moments… Like Sheetsy says, “When something big happens we will be there…”

It was a shootout game and this is how I see this game playing out over the next several years… I believe that this series will be a competitive one moving forward and I do not see either team dominating this series…

UK and Arkansas

Kentucky went into the game with a history of playing Arkansas well, ranked for the first time in many years, winner of seven of their last eight and a defense that had proven it could make adjustments and play well… For UK to have a shot at a really special season this game was one of the keys…

Arkansas was coming off a tough loss to Alabama and an off season full of controversy both on and off the field… The Hogs were picked to win based on their running game and the pundits figured they would control the ball and keep the UK offense off of the field…

The game was full of some huge ups and downs… UK’s opening possession resulted in a defensive touchdown for Arkansas, Lyons and Dixon fumbled at critical moments in the game, UK needing to finish the game with it’s fourth string tailback due to injuries to the first three and perhaps the biggest play of the game came right at the end of the half when Arkansas fumbled and Trevor Lindley for UK scoops it up and scores a defensive touchdown…

The biggest up and down was that we were at my wife’s 20th High School Reunion Saturday night… We arrived alive at Casino Aztar with our tailgating buddies Mark and Leslie Sheets (thank god Mark and I are married to women who love football like we do and we made sure they knew that Saturday night) for our own cocktail hour before cocktail hour so we could watch the game… By 7:40 PM we had missed cocktail hour and we knew we had only twenty minutes to eat… UK was up 21 to 20 so we ran out fixed plates, woofed it down and came back in and UK was down 29 to 21 and we were all just sick about it… Once we got settled back in at the bar UK went on its run… Now you know why all of that crazy shit happened during the game…

Steve Johnson, Burton and Locke were all huge in this game and the offensive line, which was the big wildcard going into the season, has played really well through the first four games… Jason Leger was once again named offensive linemen of the week in the SEC after week four… The two fullbacks, John Conner and Maurice Ginter were also big in this game…

The defense has of course been huge and they created three more turnovers Saturday… It is amazing how much “position depth” helps players get better… UK has depth at all positions on defense which means the starters now have people pushing them for playing time which creates better play…

U of L Over-rated???

Was U of L overrated??? The early season rankings are based more on what a team did last year Vs what they have done so far this year (see Michigan)… I believe that U of L had the best team they will ever have period last year (do you think that Bobby P knew this also???) and with the losses they had on defense, plus a coaching change made them beatable in this game and a couple of other games they have later in the year (West Virginia, South Florida, Rutgers and Cincy but not Syracuse)… U of L can still have a great season but their schedule now appears to be a little tougher then most thought and their defense needs allot of work…

U of L validated being overrated with an embarrassing loss to Syracuse… What is more embarrassing is the fan base turning on this coach after four games… UK fans took a beating from U of L fans for wanting to get rid of Tubby Smith after nine years and now they have turned on their new coach after four games… U of L made a nice comeback against Syracuse and had a chance in the end to pull the game out with an empty stadium (embarrassing)… Time for a reality check U of L Fans!!! Run the table the rest of the way out and you are still in a BCS game… It could happen… I do not see U of L losing to all of these teams, USF, WVA, Rutgers, Cincy and Pitt as some people are now predicting…

To be a Top Ten team year in and year out you have to have a top ten to twenty recruiting class every year and Louisville like UK will NEVER have the level of consistency in recruiting that will put them consistently in the top ten… Both teams should be able to recruit to a point that they are competitive each year and every three to four years be really competitive on a national level…

Kentucky and FAU

Woodson had a great day going 26 for 33 for 301 yards and 5 TD’s and his decision making before and after the snap was exceptional… Steve Johnson made one of the best catches I have ever seen live (it was right in front of me) for a touchdown on a ball that Woodson threw to a spot that only that Stevie could catch… The running game was very solid and the offensive line play was great again… The fullbacks also continue to play well…

The defense gave up two early long drives but played better as the game went on… Micah Johnson played a great game and starting to really show his potential and the UK Linebackers continue to impress… Woodyard is one of the best defenders in the SEC and Braxton Kelly is solid… How good is the defense??? The defensive line is paying well and the secondary is solid… We will find out how good they are the next three games…

Kentucky has to clean up their special teams play to have a special season… The kick off team seems to not stay in their lanes on coverage and a hurt Alfonso Smith, who had been a man on the kick off team, seems to be having an impact... The kicking game is also very suspect… Stay tuned Cats Fans…

The week of Upsets

Florida, Oklahoma, WVA, Texas, and Rutgers, Oregon (although they lost to a top ten team) and Clemson all lost this weekend and that is seven of the top fifteen… Wisconsin got a scare but that team just wins…

Random Thoughts

- ShagOnBaseball season is over… The Webelos were runaway winners of the league… I finished second which is my highest finish ever in Fantasy Baseball…

- The Mets collapsed!!! Since my Redbirds could not win this year that was the next best thing… F the Mets!!!

- To the two guys I sat beside at the Police contest who said, “UK has no chance against U of L”, the guy at Kroger who said to me, “Kentucky and Football do not belong in the same sentence” (I was wearing a shirt that said UK Football), The multiple people (and I do mean multiple people) who have driven by my house and shouted expletives at me and my wife when we have something on that says UK and to the guy working at Starbucks that told my wife, “U of L will stomp UK and UK will never be a football school like U of L” (she was wearing her UK Jersey on Friday before the game and probably knows a hell of allot more about football then he does), get over yourselves…

- Woodson is consistently discredited by the local media on his interception streak Former U of L QB Dave Ragone ripped him the other day about this streak saying he only throws short passes... Hey Dave that was a nice deep ball at the end of the U of L game… Woodson now has the SEC record and national record for most passing attempts without an interception (325)… I do not care how he is doing this but that he is getting it done… The criticism of him two years ago was he turns the ball over to much and now that he does not turn the ball over he is being criticized for it… The streak ended on Saturday when he threw a really bad ball… He has thrown only two interceptions in 500 plus attempts…

- After the first four weeks of picking against the spread I was at 70% which put me in first place in both Fans Of Kentucky (1300 plus entered) and Fans from Kentucky (3000 plus entered)… I was in 60th place overall on Yahoo… This was of course until the massacre this weekend… I went 7 of 22 and there were five games that I wanted to pick different but I did not (to conservative)… Dropped 2300 places on Yahoo but I am still in the top 50 on Yahoo in my two other pick sets…

- The LSU fake punt play last weekend against South Carolina was very well executed and was as good as the Boise State play last year in the Fiesta Bowl… If you did not see the play they set it up perfect by running a dive to the fullback in order to get the field goal kicker in the middle of the field on third and nine… The holder took the snap, banged the ball on the ground and then tossed it over his shoulder to the kicker who went in untouched…

- I voted to destroy the Barry Bonds record Home Run Ball… It is going to be shipped to the Hall of Fame with a big asterisk placed on it by the guy who bought the ball at auction…

- My brother says I have to lift the Brooksy tag as a sign of respect to the coach and call him Coach Brooks… The tag was actually lifted two weeks ago… We now call him “Coach Papaw”…

- My buddy CT who I tailgate with was at the Arkansas game tailgating with “The Deuce”… CT has been to every game so far this year and will be at South Carolina on Thursday night to root the Cats on…

- I am hearing that Henderson County Grad Will Fiedler is going to switch to tight end from Quarterback…

- A U of L fan told me on Tuesday of last week that he thought UK and U of L were both mediocre… Sorry… Don’t see either team as mediocre… UK is not mediocre (mediocre teams do not win road games at Arkansas) and U of L is just underachieving… A mediocre team does not win ten of it’s last eleven…

- Woodson has to say healthy… I do not want to see him run the ball on the speed option EVER again…

ShagOnMusic

I saw a swing band last Saturday night… My boy Sheetsy says you always know a band is going to be good when they have a horn section and he was right… When I listen to White Stripes I hear a heavy Jimmy Page influence with very bluesy type riffs (this is the next band I want to see live but they just cancelled this year’s tour)… My wife and I purchased a piano and are going to start taking lessons… I can see myself playing allot of Neil Young...

It has been a long hot summer

My summer kicked off with shoulder surgery in late May… It was a tough recovery period but I returned to work after four weeks and two days off and two months later (last week) the Surgeon released me to start working out with weights and do some stronger rehabilitation… I am still very weak in my right shoulder but the pain I was having is gone so I am ready to get rolling… I will not be able to play golf until April of next year after my winter of rehabilitation…

I was able to complete by Project Management Certification (big for my career stuff) and now my focus at work is getting the project I have been working on for the last year off of the ground… I am currently working six and seven days a week and this will continue through the end of the year barring any delays to my project… This project is really cool as it is a totally automated warehouse for order processing and we will have the capability of processing about 50,000 orders a day at peak capacity… When this is done I am going to ready to try something different…

This summer we installed new front and back doors our house, a new HVAC unit (if you have not priced them lately then be prepared for some sticker shock) and my wife painted the living room and dining room along with all the trim work on our main floor… Last weekend we pulled up all the carpet in anticipation of getting new wooden floors in those rooms and our main floor hallway the Monday after Labor Day… We have some cosmetic things to do after that but all the major things are done for now…

We have attended many Louisville Bats games this year and made a trip to Cincy to see Reds and Cardinals in July (Reds whipped them)…

Summer All Stars Tour

Back in July one of my childhood friends, Joey Jameson, brought his 11 year old all stars from Henderson to the Kentucky State Tournament… I was able to watch them play three games, which included a trip to the Championship Game…

The quality of baseball by all of these teams was incredible… Joey and another friend of mine Daniel Woodard did a nice job of coaching the team and I am very proud of my friends for the way they conducted themselves… They were great with the kids and you could see they spent allot of times on fundamentals… Although they lost in the Championship Game they represented themselves well…

Another Henderson Team made it all the way to the Babe Ruth All Stars National Championship Game… This team contained two friends of mine kids Dylan Bailey, son of Bruce and Dylan Peters, son of Mark…

After being eliminated in the championship of the State Tournament this team received a special invite to the regional championship after a team from Indiana was unable to participate in the tournament… The team took full advantage of the opportunity by winning the regional, then winning there pool play at the World Series before falling in the Championship Game to a team from New York…

What great memories for these kids and their parents…

St Louis Cardinals

The Redbirds are in the pennant race but overall it has been a difficult season… The off-season was not kind as they failed to sign an outfielder and they failed to retain Jeff Suppan or Jeff Weaver and made a mistake by re-signing Jim Edmunds and Mark Mulder… After all of that they are just an injury away from leading the division which is where they would be had Chris Carpenter not gotten hurt…

The National League Central is weak but St Louis proved last year that if you can get into the playoffs and get hot anything could happen… The Redbirds have now lost Juan Encarcian and Scott Rolen for the year and a key pick up last year Preston Wilson is out for the year also… Adam Kennedy is also on the DL…

My prediction is the Red Sox will win the World Series but watch out for the Yankees or Tigers if they make the playoffs as they have the pitching to make a run…

Kentucky Football (before EKU)

The first game is coming up this weekend… This is as excited I have been about UK Football since the year Brooks took over (that was a team that should have gone to a bowl game)…

I am still not drinking the Rich Brooks kool-aid like most… I believe the biggest turnaround for last years team was quarterbacks coach Randy Sanders influence on Andre Woodson and a favorable schedule… Woodson has always had the talent and Sanders brought that talent out so without that combination and the schedule I do not think that UK would have had the success they experienced last year… Rich can win me over by just repeating what he did last year… I will take 8 and 5 with a bowl win…

I am not sure if Kentucky’s schedule is ranked the toughest but I know that no other team in the country has the amount of pre-season ranked teams on its schedule as Kentucky does this year (six total)… They traded in Ole Miss and got Arkansas (on the road) and with conference games against Florida, LSU, Tennessee at Georgia, at South Carolina and at Vandy and non conference home games against Louisville and a good Kent State squad a repeat of last year is going to be tough…

Would I rather see Kentucky play in a weak conference and play a weak schedule and compete for a National Championship??? No, but……. It would be nice if Kentucky could take a hiatus from the SEC schedule for three for four years, schedule a bunch of chumps, run up some wins and then go back to the SEC… The caveat for this year is when Kentucky has a breakthrough year it will be against the best and most competitive football conference in the country… This is a golden opportunity for this program and I hope the old man and players can take advantage of it… College football is too important to the Athletic Department Budget and I believe the days of Kentucky not competing in the SEC are gone… They will not be a year in year out good team like Florida, Georgia and Tennessee every year due to years of youth and strength of schedule but they will compete…

Old Brooksy just may have Kentucky on the right path… As I stated he needs to have at a minimum had a repeat of last year… They need to beat EKU, Mississippi State, Florida International (watch out for Howard) and Kent State and then win three out of the four with Arkansas, South Carolina, Vandy and Louisville… This team has confidence and confidence can be a great thing or a dangerous thing which could lead to some marquee upsets…

Kentucky lacks depth in two major areas… Both the offensive line and defensive line already have some injury hits… The defense has some great talent and to overcome this lack of depth they will need their linebackers led by Wesley Woodyard and Braxton Kelley to step up along with Micah Johnson and Johnny Williams… I look for this defense to play with the same abandon they played with the last two games of the year last year and they will need to create the level of turnovers they did in 2006 to overcome the depth issues… They have to show major improvements over last year…

On offense they can overcome the depth issues with talent… This UK team has weapons with Woodson, Burton, Tamme, Little, Dixon, Ford and Lyons at the skill positions and with some choice play calling can be one of the most potent offenses in the country even with the tough schedule… They have potential for three to four first team all SEC performers…

Let’s play some football…

After the EKU Game

The offense performed as expected… I did not see them run the ball up the middle much at all which concerns me… Everything seemed to be outside of the tackles and that speaks for the team speed… They need to be able to run the ball up the middle… I was disappointed that Woodson got sacked twice although once I think was his issue…

The defense did what they should against Eastern… They really shut them down but they ended up giving up a touchdown after a fumbled punt… The interior line did not get allot of penetration but I thought the ends played well… The linebackers and the secondary played well but the secondary has some hits on injuries so we will see how this plays out over the next two weeks… The ends and the linebackers are going to have to play big against Kent State’s option read offense (this is what UK struggles with each year)…

The kicking game was trash… That has to be addressed… That was five points that was given up by the kicker and to pull upsets UK will need those five points… They were all just dead misses… Let the freshmen from Trinity kick!!!

My player of the game was Alfonso Smith… He is a demon on special teams and pretty good as a 3rd string tailback…

UK played without making allot of mistakes which is good for an early season game… This weekend will be a big test for this team…

ShagOnSports Random Thoughts

- UK basketball has twenty home games this year… This is a good set up for Coach Billy G to get this team going this year… The home schedule is not the greatest but the overall schedule is a good one… The SEC has some great overall talent so the conference schedule will be tough…

- Billy D is back after a short stint in Orlando… What the hell was he thinking??? Can he win another Championship at Florida in the next ten years??? My vote is no… His run is over for now…

- After winning the first half of the ShagOnGolf Fantasy League the team called RubberSoul has thoroughly knocked me around in the second half (He is in first place in our Fans of Kenny Perry Group for the second half and 15th overall)… Unfortunately RubberSoul has struggled (he had only one player make the weekend due to missed cuts and wd’s) this weekend and lost his strongholds… With a big two weeks I could still push past him and win the overall title in our group…

- I am in second place in the ShagOnBaseball League… My team struggled early then worked my way up to first place for a couple of weeks… I am about 160 points out of first after last night but a made a bone head play and forgot to put one of my pitchers in for the night… He pitched a complete game shut out and struck out eight, which would have been worth twenty points total… That could come back to haunt me…

- Off to a good start in picking College Football… In Fans of Kentucky I am in First place and in Fans from Kentucky fifth place (15 of 19 correct)… In the ShagOnFootball League I am in first but with only 13 of 19 correct (I switched it up a little)… No, I did not pick Appalachian State to cover against Michigan…

- I entered an open league on Yahoo for Fantasy Pro Football for the first time… I still will not watch much Pro but it will give me some insight into the players… Very simple league with limited rosters…

- They are calling the Appy State upset the biggest ever… ESPN had listed Centre College’s victory over Harvard (C6H0) in 1921 as the biggest ever until now… Centre won the mythical National Championship in 1921… Appy State is pretty damn good and would beat allot of teams in Division one… Lloyd Carr is done!!!

- Rich Brooks needs to quit dyeing his hair… Looks awful!!!

ShagOnMusic

We got to see The Police live at Churchill Downs this summer and will see The Killers and Tori Amos in the next month… There is some really great new music out there including Interpol, Brand New and Social Distortion... I have completely sworn off conventional radio and listen to nothing but Satellite Radio now (for $.40 cents per day you get music with no commercials and almost all Sports Programs as well as news talk, etc)…
