No Dancing

by ShagOnSports

One of the reasons I do not watch allot of NFL is due to the amount of celebrations and unsportsmanlike conduct that occurs on the field during a game… I understand that one gets excited when they make a good play but I like the college rules in relation to taunting and excessive celebration for football…

When is it OK to celebrate and when is it excessive???

It is week four of the NFL regular season and the Eagles are playing the Cardinals… On second and eight the Eagles defensive linemen tackles the running back in the back field for a two yard loss… The lineman then goes into a celebration routine/juke/dance like he just won the Super Bowl… Excessive??? I think so…

The Chargers complained at the way the Patriots celebrated on their field when the game was over… Apparently allot of this was related to several Patriots who were mocking a Chargers player who does his celebratory dance quite often during a game… To me this is whining!!! Come on Chargers you can dish it out but can’t take it!!!

Hey San Diego what about the 15 yard head butt penalty on third down when you had held them??? What about the fumble of the punt when you should have just fallen on the ball??? What about the interception that seals the game and instead of just falling down your player tries to advance the ball down the field (that player was UK Grad Marlon McCree, ugh)???

Emotions are running high in an NFL playoff game and I am sure that the last thing you want the opposing team to do is celebrate a win on your field but you had you chance to prevent this during the game and you failed so now you must take what you were dishing out… That to me is not excessive celebration…

An example of excessive or maybe premature celebration was during the Saints and Bears Game last Sunday… When Reggie Bush caught the swing pass and out ran the entire Bears defense at about the fifteen yard line he turned around and taunted the Bears players who were chasing him and then flipped into the end zone… After he scored he got up and did a touchdown dance… Reggie, you are still two points down and how much did your actions fire up the Bears at this point??? Guess what Reggie your team lost and never had the lead… In college the flip into the end zone alone would have been a fifteen yard penalty…

The NFL should eliminate the dancing or better yet I would like to see a coach do it for his team… When you score a touchdown the etiquette should be to act like you have been there before, put the ball on the ground and then celebrate as necessary with your team but no organized celebrations please… When you make a tackle on the kick off, NO DANCING like the Colts player did during the game last Sunday…

These actions are part of the reason why some Players in the NFL are labeled as Thugs, Spoiled Brats, etc… by the media and fans… Think about T.O.!!! It is truly a turnoff to allot of people… It is OK to celebrate but excessive celebration should be limited to winning a championship and not making a play on second and eight…

Dance on my field during the game and I would say that I am more then likely to retaliate on you when I get the opportunity… I have never been a trash talker while in the heat of competition and I really not much of a trash talker when a game has ended because I truly believe those things come back to haunt ones who consistently effort to show someone up during a game of even after a game… What comes around goes around…

I have decided that I am going to have a different dance at work for the following:

- Conference call ends
- Paycheck arrives
- Project Plan Milestone is achieved
- Work day has ended
- Bonus check arrives
- I get a raise

Pardon me if I told this story before but I remember as a kid playing Little League football we played our arch rivals for the division title and decide who goes to the Championship Game… Before the game started the opposing team had made a dummy and put our uniform colors on the dummy and in warm ups they were stomping all over it trying to intimidate us… All they did was piss us off and our coach made sure we understood how they were rubbing it in our face… This fired us up and we proceeded to kick their ass and went on to win the championship…

Celebrate when the game is over!!!

Kentucky Wildcats Basketball (written before the Georgia Game)

One should never lose to Vanderbilt three times in a row… More than likely Kentucky will lose to Vandy four times in a row as they still have to play them in Nashville and Vandy is a good team but not so good you lose to them four times in a row… Vandy did the same things the entire game on offense and defense and Kentucky did not make any adjustments to their schemes… Why??? Kentucky played a nice stretch at right at the end of the half to take the lead but other then that run they played a bad game and did not adjust to what Vandy was doing… Everyone in the building knew that Vandy was going to beat you behind the arc…

Kentucky played three tough games prior to last Saturday (at UNC, at Ole Miss and at Louisville) since Maui and they were two and one in these games... The schedule from here on out is a tough one and based on the performance of this team on Saturday here is what I see moving forward…

The fact that Kentucky has not been ranked in any of the polls despite an eleven game winning streak was justified after Saturday’s loss to Vandy (the players are saying it was a fluke)… Kentucky did not and does not deserve to be ranked even though their RPI is number top ten in the country…

Kentucky needs a couple of upsets either at Alabama, Florida at home or at Florida, at Vandy, home with/or at Tennessee. … I predict that Kentucky will finish the season 5 and 6 over the next two months and that will put them at 20 and 10 going into SEC tournament… This will get them into the NCAA tournament but I do not think this team will crack the top 25…

Is this acceptable???

Tubby is a great coach but I still say his fault is in his assistant coaches and the offense he is trying to run… People are frustrated at the games with the one four set that UK runs and the lack of movement and motion this type of offense creates on a regular basis… I have to agree that the offense needs an overhaul and that the type of isolation offense that Kentucky is trying to run did not work on Saturday and is really boring to watch… The people at the games yell at the players and blame the players but the players are running what the coaches are designing and until the coaches design something else to run this is what they have… Tubby focuses to much on defensive match ups and forgets that you have to score more points then the other team to win the game…

As I said at the start of the season I believe that Tubby has to the end of next year to right the ship or he is done… Tubby has a nice recruiting class this year (where would UK be without these freshmen) and has another in the works… If Randolph Morris sticks around then I think that UK can make a nice run at a Championship next year but Tubby will still need to make some changes to the coaching staff in the off season… Tubby needs Randolph to stay!!!

There is talent on this team but someone needs to direct this talent in the proper direction… Tubby can do it but he needs to shake up his staff… Billy Donavan brought in a coach who specialized in defense after getting bounced from the NCAA tournament in the early rounds two years in a row… Two years later he wins the tournament… Tubby should take a page from this book…

UK Basketball written after Georgia Game

After the debacle last night at Georgia my patience with Tubby has worn thin!!! Tubby got completely out coached in the second half… Georgia made all the adjustments and Kentucky again made none… Kentucky was up seventeen in the first half, looked like the damn showtime Lakers and then got killed…

After the game Tom Leach asked Tubby what he was going to do now and his answer was, “I don’t know”!!! Joe Crawford’s comment after the game was “We thought we had the game won and did not play hard”!!!

It is going to take a strong finish and strong tournament showing for me not to think it is time for Kentucky Basketball to move in a new direction… I need to see two of these four things this year…

Can this team finish 7 and 3 (22 & 8 overall)???
Can this team finish 5 and 5 (20 & 10)???
Can this team win the SEC Tournament (not if they are a three seed in the tournament)
Can this team make a run to the final eight???

I caught ESPN radio on Thursday at lunch and they said, “Hey Kentucky Basketball Fan, Are you happy with your basketball program… Are you happy with ten loss seasons, not being ranked in the top twenty-five, getting bounced in the early rounds of the tournament, not getting the top recruits, not going to the final four and not being mentioned as a top ten program any longer…” They spent a good ten minutes on this and basically said it is time for Kentucky to go in another direction…

What are your thoughts???

Kentucky Basketball Fans at Rupp Arena Suck

Other then the Eruption Zone the fans at the games are horrible… I do not see Rupp Arena as a huge home court advantage anymore since most of the fans sit on their ass and view the game like they are watching the opera… To quote Mark Pruitt, “You all suck, you expletive suck, Stand up mother expletives!!!”

I look at what people wear to the games as a starting point… You are not going to work at the used car lot and you are not going to the derby… If you are not there to watch the basketball games then stay home because nobody cares if you are there are not… Give more seats to the students!!! One side of the lower level and one end zone should be given to the students and move the opera people upstairs…

Kentucky fans at the games are not very knowledgeable of the inner workings as to what is going on on the floor… Allot of fans to not appear to understand when and where a five second call occurs, fouls (most fouls occur with the body and when one swats down at the ball), ten second calls and what is classified as a turnover… Allot of the fans have no idea what a two one two zone press is, a half court trapping defense, a two three zone, a one three one offense or defense, a box and one, ball line defense (this is the defense that UK plays), a one four offensive set (Kentucky mostly runs a one four offense), a motion offense, a high pick and roll (this is what killed Kentucky at Georgia in the second half), a two man game or the triangle offense… This is based on stuff I here at the games…

Do you have to understand all of these things to enjoy the game??? No… But if you are going to complain about something you should take the time to understand what you’re complaining about…

The last thing that really chaps my ass is the person who no matter what is going on in the game start to leave with eight or ten minutes to go… On Saturday I noticed the first group of people leaving with about eight minutes to go and then with each minute that passed more and more people started to leave… Problem is that game was not decided until about a minute and half left to go… Where the hell are they going??? Is it that important to beat the traffic??? How about live a little and stay until the game is over and then socialize a bit afterwards and have a cold drink… Is your boring life that important to get back to??? I never set in traffic because I stay until the game is over and the have a recap before I hit the road…

UK Basketball Fans at Rupp Arena Suck!!! The best UK fans are at road games and tournament games because they are there to root hard for the team and watch the game!!!

ShagOnSports Random Thoughts

- There is considerable balance in college basketball… Look at the games on Tuesday night where IU loses to Illinois, Auburn whips Alabama and BC and Florida State battled to the wire… IU managed to only score 37 points in their game (14 points in the last 30 minutes… Is UK a victim of this parody???

- Show up someone in a baseball game and you are going to get a ball in the ear the next time you come up to the plate… I am sure that Reggie Bush got a few extra shots after his touchdown run against the Bears…

- The University of Kentucky Football team is now the only division one school that has a black offensive coordinator and a black defensive coordinator… Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy are the first black coaches to take their teams to the Super Bowl… When are we going to stop calling them black coaches and just coaches??? Time to move forward… It was written one time that their would be a Martian in the White House before Kentucky would have a black head coach in basketball so I wonder what that writer thinks about this breakthrough at UK??? As I said, time to move forward and just call them a Coach…

- Louisville had a really nice win at DePaul last weekend and again on Monday night VS UCONN… Their season is going to be an interesting one the rest of the year… The Big East is down and that should work in their favor so this team could and should make the NCAA Tournament…

- Bill Parcells resigned… Same Bill Parcells that the rumor mill said was negotiating with UK for the head coaching job before Brooksy got the call (this is why UK lost out on Norm Chow because he got tired of waiting)… Who gets the Dallas job now??? Rumor is Cowboys want Nick Saban (tongue in cheek)… My cube mate Bickel says Sean Payton from New Orleans… Maybe Jerry Jones can have some more plastic surgery and hair implants so he looks like Jimmy Johnson and takes the job himself… What would UK football be like today if Mitch would have been able to hire Parcells???

- I predict the Super Bowl will be a Super Bore… Colts kill the Bears…

- To the Vanderbilt fan who gave me Shit after the game last Saturday… It is great for you but how many Championship Banners are hanging in your gym??? Kentucky has 7 NCAA banners, 42 conference titles and I think the total is 18 SEC tournament titles… Vandy has Zero, Zero and Zero… Shut Up until you have something to back up your smack with some hardware!!!

ShagOnMusic

- There are a couple of tunes hanging out there that I really like… Three hot bands out there are Shiny Toy Guns, TV On the Radio and Silver Sun Pick Ups who have a great song called Lazy Eye… All of these are standards on my favorite XM channel 47 better know as Ethel… If you would just try the Satellite Radio for three months you will keep it for life!!! You can get any kind of music you want from any era at any time…

Best College Football Season Ever

by ShagOnSports

UK Beats Clem(p)son, Clem(p)son Disbands Football Program

At the recommendation of USA Today the Clem(p)son Tigers disbanded their football program after losing to UK 28 to 20… USA Today said before the bowl that if Clem(p)son lost they should disband their football program... Word is they are going to tone down their shade of Orange and become Tennessee fans… Nothing sucks like a big orange…

Rolling to the Game

On Thursday my wife, my nephew and I made our way to Nashville… We first visited the Opry Mills Mall, which is on the grounds where Opryland used to be… I had no idea that Opryland was gone but hats off to the developers as they have built a first class area for shopping, golfing and dining…

We ventured to our hotel, checked in un-packed our stuff and the party was on… This was our first bowl game experience and we were very excited to be there… All of our normal tail gaiting crew was there along with several other people who came down from our hometown of Henderson…

Our friends Mark “Padre” Sheets and his wife Leslie Sheets provided us with some fantastic transportation to the game… Leslie’s father and brother came down in a large RV that fifteen of us “rolled” to the game in for the day… Mr. Comer was our designated driver for the day and he did a fantastic job of getting us to and from the stadium

The RV came equipped with a bathroom, microwave and conventional oven, Refrigerator, couch and chair sitting and a bedroom that served as the nap area for my nephew Matty throughout the day…

At 7:00 AM on Friday I started rousing everyone about and began the process of loading all the essentials into the RV… Beer, Beer, Jell-O Shots (CT and his wife Shannon always comes through with the shots), Beer, Sodas, Chili, Chicken Strips, Chips, Water and Beer… We also had beer…

It was a bit of a challenge getting everyone ready to roll but by 7:50 AM we had everyone ready to roll but……… Mr. C at inadvertently left one of the generators on so the RV would not start due to the battery being dead… As we got the RV jumped we avoided a huge disaster when I asked Dave “Burner” Turner if he had the tickets??? I could tell by the look on his face that he did not… Close one…

By 8:15 AM we were off and rolling… After a little father and son bickering between the Comers as to which route we should take to the stadium we headed for downtown… We had figured it would take a good hour to get there but at 8:40 AM we were parked in the RV lot and unloading the RV… There was allot of UK Blue and very little Clem(p)son Orange around…

Once we were unloaded and parked the crew ventured over to the Cat Walk to welcome the players to the stadium… Since I had not gone to the Cat Walk all year I did not want to jinx the team so I stayed behind and guarded the Jell-O shots… The Cat Walk from what I have heard was the biggest of the year and was a demonstration of how many fans UK had at the bowl…

This was some of the finest tailgating of the year due to the accommodations… You could be in the parking lot hanging out for a while and then go sit in your living room and relax…

To the game...

On the way my nephew Matt said Woodyard was going to have a big game and predicted that if he gets ten tackles or more Kentucky would win (He was credited with 12)… I felt like that if Kentucky took care of the ball, got some key turnovers and if Woodson could only be sacked three times or less (I counted three during the game but the stats read four) then Kentucky would have a chance to win…

Just like being at any other postseason event the day had a festive feel and when we started walking into the game you could sense the excitement… People were excited to be there and with as many Cats as there was at the stadium our excitement level was turned up a few notches…

Kentucky lost the toss, which was a good thing because Clem(p)son chose to go on defense first and put our offense on the field… I think that if UK wins the toss they should always go on offense…

Kentucky started out with a nice drive the appeared to stall when Woodson was sacked and fumbled… The fumble was overturned (Replay helped Kentucky as they always seem to be on the wrong side of these types of calls) and then Kentucky completed a huge third down and forever…

Kentucky marched the ball down the field and had first down and goal from the one… As I watched the players change out on offense something struck me as funny… Number 4 was going into the game on offense… I informed my people that our prized recruit who had played defense all year long was in the game at running back… It through Clempson for a loop also as they called a timeout but to no avail two players later the Cats were on the board and the place was going absolutely nuts… This team looked well prepared and ready to play…

The fake punt was a great call… The Cats had nothing to lose at this point… The three previous punt efforts were really bad… Clem(p)son partially blocked one punt and came really close on the other two so if you think about it this was a logical call because Clem(p)son was putting all of it’s ducks on the pond to try and block the kick or with enough pressure create another poor effort…

With an over pursuing Clem(p)son punt team Kentucky punter Tim Masthay got rid of the ball just in time and completed a pass at the ankles (nice catch Marcus) of McClinton and picked up ten yards… This was key turning point in the game… Great call by Joker also to go right up top on a fabulous pass from Woodson to Ford for a streaking touchdown….

Kentucky’s last scoring drive was also a nice one… They got the ball down the field and then used a play to score that worked for them in an earlier game and failed them against Tennessee on fourth and goal for the win in the season finale… UK lined up an offensive tackle on the line of scrimmage out with three wide outs stacked out there also… Woodson took the snap, rolled to the right a little and started making his reads… The OT was a decoy that worked well and Clem(p)son had nice coverage on our receivers but they forgot about Tight End Jacob Tamme who ran a little tight end across route and stood wide open in the left corner of the end zone… Touchdown Kentucky!!! With a 28 to 6 advantage now the Cats just needed to beat the clock…

UK however had to make the game interesting… The Cats went into prevent mode to early and that nearly cost them… It took an onside kick recovery to seal the game and based on all the crazy shit that has happened to UK football over the years I will say there was some heavy tension in the air the last five minutes…

The celebration as the game ended was exciting… We stuck around to see the trophy presentations for the MCB Champs and also Andre collecting the MVP trophy…

I thought that the defense played their best game of the year and they were well prepared to play… Mike Archer and the defensive coaches did a great job of having the defense ready to play… The D bailed Kentucky out with a nice interception in the end zone and a couple of key fumble recoveries on other drives…

I was happy for Woodson to be named MVP, the seniors on this team who made it through probation and I am happy for Coach Brooks and his staff… I just hope that this can be a sign of great things to come for this program…

Best quote from the game??? David “Burner” Turner said after Damario Ford caught the pass in stride for a touchdown, “He was running like someone was chasing him”!!!

Coach Brooks, What about next Year???

First let me say I was wrong about Coach Brooks for this year… I did not see this team winning seven games and then a bowl, not because of talent but because of coaching… Let’s once again examine Coach Brooks… I was wrong for this year!!!

At Oregon…

50 wins – 79 losses and four ties over his first twelve seasons… Only four winning seasons… Lack of facilities and funding was a big factor in Coach Brooks record in the early years at Oregon…

Around 1986 (Thanks to Michael Jordan) NIKE became the major player in the Sporting Goods business, specifically shoes and with Phil Knight being an Oregon Alumni; well you do the math… There is now money available; facilities are being upgraded, etc… Rich Brooks’s record at Oregon during the next eight years is 39 wins and 32 losses and four winning seasons…

We will not even examine the NFL portion of Rich Brooks’s career but it is significant to mention that he was the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons when they went to the Super Bowl around 1999… He also served as interim head coach during the playoffs when Dan Reeves had health issues…

At UK…

I will give Coach Brooks a pass on the three years before this year at Kentucky… There is no doubt that probation and the lack of scholarships and the lack of integrity that the program was decimating… So if we throw those three years away then he has 13 wins and 12 losses with one bowl win (bowl win counted in my overall total)… My issue with this is he should be 14 and 10 with two bowl appearances…

There is still the Ron Hudson issue… He stood behind this guy 110% and it was Hudson who saw the handwriting on the wall and saved Coach Brooks job by leaving after year two… The good side of this is UK now has Joker Phillips as the Offensive Coordinator and he has proven with two years under his belt in this position that he is capable of calling the plays… Also how much credit goes to new assistant Coach Randy Sanders for the turnaround of Woodson… Brooks desperately needs to keep Coach Sanders on his staff for next year…

Defense… Where has it been??? Brooks is supposed to be a defensive coach… Mike Archer is a better coach then what he has shown… Is it talent??? Is it youth??? Lack of numbers??? Is it all three??? Kentucky had some good defensive games this year… They played better D then Ohio State did on Florida and the defense played well against Georgia, Vandy, Tennessee, Ole Miss and then Clem(p)son… If you go by what they did in their last two games then I would say youth and not talent were why you saw this defense drop bombs against U of L, LSU and SouthNorthEastWest Louisiana in their next to last game of the year…

Everyone wanted a change all year including me but now that the season is over is this a defense that is getting ready to break out next year??? How will a coaching change on defense impact their progression??? Can new defensive coordinator Steve Brown turn the defense around???

I could go on and on but the bottom line for me is this… Coach Brooks has 13 wins and 12 losses in his two years at UK… He has not beaten Louisville, has two marquee wins in Georgia and Clem(p)son but has lost to Ohio and Indiana (even though these losses are in the years we are not counting) and if he looses to Central Michigan and SouthNorthEastWest Louisiana (they could have gone either way) this year then Mitch Barnhart may have been introducing Coach Kragthorpe as the UK coach instead of him being introduced as the Louisville coach today… So what is it going to take for me to get both feet in the Rich Brooks boat???

Kentucky starts out with EKU and Temple next year in games one and two so 2 and 0… Brooksy got his wish and now he has two tune-ups before U of L… This will be a U of L team that will have a new coach and will be without Michael Bush… Second Step is starting out 3 and 0…

Next step is beat Florida International and start out 4 and 0…

Next step… The rest of the home schedule includes Florida, LSU, Mississippi State and Tennessee… Win one of those games…

UK has road games with South Carolina, Arkansas, Vandy and Georgia… Win one of those games…

This would put Brooksy at 6 and 6 for 2007 and 19 wins with 18 losses overall and more then likely another bowl game… With a bowl win he could be 20 and 18 or a bowl loss he would be 19 and 19… I think that 5 and 7 next year would be a step back and Kentucky can ill afford to step back nor is that acceptable…

Can UK compete year end and year out with Florida, LSU, Auburn, Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee??? I will take some 9 and 3’s, 8 and 4’s, 7 and 5’s along with a down year every three to four years because that is the reality of UK football… I still think with an offensive minded coach who runs and offense like you see Florida run and what you will see Kragthorpe run at U of L then Kentucky can compete on a national level every three to four years and be consistently competitive in the SEC…

Can that man be Joker Phillips???

I will admit it appears UK football is headed in the right direction but I have high expectations that this team can soar even higher and become more consistent… The faculties are there, the fan base is there and there is money being pumped into the program… It is time for this coaching staff to take us to the next level… Five and seven is next year will not be the next level… Hal Mumme, Bill Curry and Jerry Claiborne won bowl games one year and pretty much did squat after that…

Did Mike Archer leave because he sees what is coming the next two years??? Five and seven next year and then a new Quarterback in 2008… Hmmmmmmmmmm...

Best College Football Season Ever???

It gets my vote… I really enjoyed the bowl games that I was able to watch… There were some exciting finishes… The Boise State finish was unreal and I am sure we used to run all three of the plays they finished with in that game on the sandlots…

Ohio State is now 0 and 8 against the mighty SEC in bowl games… Florida just put and SEC whipping on the Buckeyes… Urban Myer is building a dynasty at Florida so watch out!!!

My Navy Midshipmen lost a heartbreaker to Boston College on a last second field goal… Navy had the game under control and ran an ill advised option that was fumbled and set the BC last second field goal…

The SEC and Big East both made good showings in their bowl games but Tennessee and Arkansas both disappointed me with their losses…

The best bowl team that I saw that got not respect in the end was BYU… I watched them play their bowl game and they looked impressive and they lost their regular season games by less then five points…

My panel of experts has voted and here is the final poll…

1. Florida
2. Ohio State
3. LSU
4. USC
5. Michigan
6. Boise State
7. Wisconsin
8. Louisville
9. West Virginia
10. Auburn

If Louisville blows out Wake then I put them in the top five but they really did nothing to impress me in this win… Michigan did lose to USC but I still see them beating Louisville and Boise in a head to head match up…

UK Basketball

I have had trouble switching to basketball mode…

UK is looking pretty solid… The road win last Saturday at Ole Miss was huge… This win set the tone for the rest of the SEC season (remember folks your National Champs last year has six SEC losses)… Joe Crawford stepped up and the team continued to play solid defense… Smooth has played two great games in a row and I think he is capable of being and all conference player based on his overall play…

The weak point in Kentucky’s game is rebounding on the defensive end… The Cats continue to give up allot of offensive rebounds to teams and this needs to be corrected… I would like to see Woo and Randolph in the game together at least towards the end of games to help with this issue… I wish that Sheray Thomas was a better rebounder but rebounding takes allot of extra effort and technique… I think Sheray has the effort but this coaching staff does not teach technique very well… Good rebounder's have a nose for the ball and understand positioning under the boards and with rebounding size really does not matter…

Growing up on the sandlots and playing ball I was not a very good rebounder because I did not understand the positioning required… One of the best rebounder’s that I played with in my group of friends was Sam Gibbs who was also usually the shortest guy on the floor and it was all effort and technique…

Bobby Perry disappeared for a period of time this season but played well on Wednesday night, Derrick Jasper continues to improve and I think is going to be a special player at UK and he has made 20 of his last 24 shots… Jasper understands his role on both offense and defense… Perry Stevenson is improving and Jodie Meeks is also going to be a special player… I like Meeks effort and he shoots free throws well… The Cats are not a real good free throw shooting team but late in games with Meeks and Smooth on the floor the Cats can get it done at the line…

Kentucky is not ranked… They are 6th in the RPI rankings, which is really more important the top 25… The Cats need some big wins in the next couple of weeks and need to beat a ranked team… …

Ugly win against Mississippi State but good teams know how to win ugly…

Let’s here from the Nay Sayers!!!

Louisville Cardinals

Ricky P to me has lost some of his passion... If Tubby Smith goes to the NIT two years in a row then I would say he needs to be fired... Where does this leave Ricky P??? Can he get this team to the NIT or somehow pull a miracle and get them to the NCAA??? If anyone can do it Rick can but he there is just something missing in his overall demeanor… I know that U of L fans have become frustrated with Rick and the next several months will be interesting…

As for football U of L hired the right coach in Krawgthorpe… It will however be interesting to see if U of L can maintain it’s football momentum with a new coach and the level of personnel changes that it appears U of L will have… SI said that if Brohm stays then they are a top ten team… If he goes then they drop them down to the second tier…

I think that Brohm can run the offense that Coach K likes to use but I do not think that Hunter Cantwell is mobile enough to excel in this offense… With Greg Brohm staying as the passing game coordinator for U of L this will help the transition know matter if it is Brohm or Cantwell taking the snaps…

I believe the Big East is going to be more competitive and balanced over the next few years so we will see how this plays out…

How would U of L fair against UK’s schedule next year??? How would Louisville do if they had to play Florida, Tennessee and Georgia each year and then throw in two of LSU, Arkansas, Auburn or Alabama every year???

Random Thoughts

- I once road to a baseball all star game with Mr Comer (who drove the RV to the game)… Myself and Sam Gibbs (we were eleven years old) were cutting up so bad Mr. C pulled over and threatened to make us walk home about 50 miles from home… We clammed up quick!!!

- I have been watching Pro Football now that they are at the playoff level... My wife really wants the Colts to win and I think they have a great chance... San Diego should have beaten New England... Former Kentucky Wildcat intercepted a pass on fourth down and instread of just falling down he try to advance the ball and fumbled... San Diego had some other bonehead plays that cost them also...

- Don’t count me as one of the people who are glad Alabama hired Nick Saban… What Bama should have done is given Mike Shula another year but Shula would have needed to go out and hire an offensive coordinator who was going to open it up… Note to Mal Moore at Alabama, Did you see what Urban Myer did against OSU last night??? That is how you are going to win allot of football games in the SEC…

- Louisville hired the right guy to replace Bobby P… This coach will run a wide open offense and his brand of football will be exciting to watch… I was shocked that Bobby P left but Tom Jurich hired the right guy… If he has success though hold on U of L fans… He will be mentioned for every job opening in the country no matter what he says…

- Looks like Navy will be keeping Coach Paul Johnson… Coach J has done a great job and I am glad he is not leaving for this year anyway… I cannot believe that Alabama did not give him a better look but they got their man… Coach J calls his own plays and he does not have a cheat sheet and claims he rarely consults with the booth…

- Florida can now lay claim to holding both the Men’s basketball and football championships for the year… Nice feat by this SEC School… Can any other school lay claim to this??? Yes they can… In 1951 the University of Kentucky won the Basketball championship and then defeated number one Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl to finish 11 & 1… Back then the last poll was conducted before the bowl games so Oklahoma was declared the AP National Champions before UK beat them in the bowl 14 to 7… The Sargain team went back and rated the 1951 Season and based on UK’s bowl win and tough season schedule named them the number one team…

- Duke loses two conference games in a row… Coach K should be fired!!! He has not been to the final four in five years either… Coach K must go!!! (Tongue in cheek)!!! North Carolina loses to Virginia Tech, Roy Williams must go!!!

- St Louis Cardinals re-signed lefty Mark Mulder which I think was a good move based on how they signed him… Their rotation is shaping up and will include Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder, Anthony Reyes and Kip Wells… They have other options with Adam Wainwright and Ryan Franklin and appear to still be in the running for free agent Jeff Weaver… They still need another outfield and I believe they will make a trade by the time Spring Training starts…

- Go on line and check out the new UK basketball practice facility at ukatheletics.com… The facility is really nice and will be a big benefit in the recruiting process… The women’s team has an identical side to the mens… Go Cats!!!

- Fantasy golf has once again begun on Yahoo… I am in the regular game plus two other pick sets… One is Fans of Kenny Perry and the other is Scuffletown Country Club where I am competing against Bruce “Rubber Soul” Bailey and Craig “Barrett Bulldog” Glick… Golf seems to be early this year and I am anxious to see the impact of the Fed Ex cup format…

- Back to short hair… I got it cut off on Saturday… I really would like to let it grow way out but it is not feasible… My wife got the Posh Spice cut and it looks great… The haircut was inspired by a picture she saw of Posh during Beckhams announcement that he was coming to LA... Only good thing I can find about that situation… I just cannot get excited about Soccer… Beckham to LA is about like Gretzky to LA… All flare and no substance to me… Soccer athletes are amongst some of the best in the world but I just cannot get into a game that has hardly any scoring… They should bend the rules like Hockey to create a more offensive game…

- I had heard several tracks off of the new Beck CD on XM and finally purchased the CD before the trip to the Music City Bowl… The CD is really good and the sounds are everything from Lynard Skynardish to one my other favorite bands Gorillaz… He and his band have a unique sound... Two other bands I am really liking right now are TV on the Radio and Pepper…
