Super Bore

by ShagOnSports

This year’s Super Bowl was a bit more interesting to me then most because of my wife’s love affair with Peyton Manning but overall it was a sloppy game… I would love to be a Colts fan but I cannot root for a team that resides in Indiana... As a kid I was a fan of the Baltimore Colts when they had Bert Jones at quarterback along with Lydell Mitchell, Roger Carr (big ears Roger), Roosevelt Leak and Glenn Doughty… They were the team I followed in between the Dolphins and the Rams… I guess you could say I am a Baltimore Colts fan…

I have watched the Super Bowl evolve into the huge event it is today or huge day anyway… I remember watching my first Super Bowl when the Cowboys beat the Phins 24 to 3 and I believe I have watched most of them since although most are not very memorable games… Here are the things that stand out to me in games, which are not much and demonstrate my lack of interest in the event…

Doug Williams lighting up the Broncos…
John Riggins running for a long touchdown on 4th and 1 against the Phins…
Hall of Famer Jackie Smith dropping a sure touchdown pass for Dallas…
Garo Yepremian’s ill-fated pass and no effort to tackle Mike Bass as he returned the pass for a touchdown…
Jake Scott intercepting two passes against the Skins…
Marcus Allen’s directional reverse on a handoff to run a long touchdown…

To me the whole thing is overrated and commercialized to a ridiculous extent, which makes it difficult for the game to live up the hype… The commercials are great and the half time shows have been pretty good but the game should be played in the middle of the day and maybe even on a Saturday…

Fantasy Baseball Players Needed

I am looking for people who are willing to sign up for Yahoo ($24.95 to sign up for life) and then pay the fee to play fantasy baseball (another $24.95) starting in late March in a invite only league… We need at a minimum eight players to play… Right now I have four (Me, Bruce Bailey, my nephew Matt and Brad Jarrett)… I need at least four more to commit… Any takers??? You have to tinker with your team on a daily basis to stay competitive in the league (takes about ten minutes per day, come on you have ten minutes a day)…

Kentucky Wildcats Basketball before Arkansas Game

The votes are in… Most everyone I have talked to agrees with the assessment that Kentucky needs to finish with two or three of the five items I have listed below… This poll was taken before the Arkansas game and comments in ( ) were updated today…

Kentucky needs to finish the season at 22 – 8 (not going to happen)…
Kentucky needs to finish the season at 21 – 9… (not going to happen)
Kentucky needs to make it to the final of the SEC Tournament… (possible)
Kentucky needs to win the SEC Tournament… (impossible)
Kentucky needs to make it to the final eight of the NCAA Tournament… (not going to happen)

Could this program be ready for a change in direction??? Can it just be Coach Smith cleaning house on the bench and bringing in new assistants??? I still say bring in John Pelphrey to coach the offense now and let him be the coach in waiting… I think Tubby is a great coach but he is just making bad decisions… If he stays after this year next year will be interesting…

I am really tired of watching this team play offense… There is no movement and the passing is terrible most of the time… How can Smooth get two five second calls during the UT game??? I liked UT’s 2, 1, 2 set they ran most of the game… I have noticed allot of teams running a similar offense and it seems these teams create spacing and passing lanes that do not exist for Kentucky… I find Tubby’s offense offensive!!! Even though Indiana beat Wisconsin last night I like the Badgers offensive sets, the movement they get and the shots that are created…

I believe there is talent on this team but I think the offensive scheme needs an overhaul…

After Arkansas

Nice win… That was a game this team needed to build momentum for the next two… Now just don’t look past South Carolina… Tubby finally did a good job of adjusting his game plan… Something that Larry Conley says that Tubby always does well… Sorry Larry that is something that I do not see this year…

Randolph Morris is lazy again… I could have defended better in the post then he did against Arkansas… Tubby made a nice move going small but how come Woo or Perry Stevenson did not get a look in the second half???

Smooth played the best half of his UK career… Joe Crawford played another nice game… Sheray Thomas has really come on strong… Bobby Perry sucks…

Jamal Meeks is a special player… I see him developing into a Keith Bogans type of player but better on defense… He, Michael Porter and Derrick Jasper will make a nice backcourt over the next several years…

I have never said that this team does not have allot of potential… They are full of possibilities!!!

Home South Carolina, home Florida, home LSU, home Georgia, @ Florida, @ Tennessee, @ Alabama, @ Vandy… Any predictions out there??? I say four and four or five and three… That gets them to 21 or 22 wins… Can this team win the SEC tournament??? If they are the number two seed in the east that is possible…

After South Carolina

Nice move by Tubby to not start Randolph… Not sure for all of the reasons but this should make Morris think about not playing defense… Is Randolph a man or a mouse??? Around midnight on Saturday night you will know…

We need Wookash… Woo is a great example of the poor ability of this coaching staff to utilize this talent… Watch Woo play D under the boards… He has been taught to take that position of stiff with arms up in air… It is shameful to me that this talent has been wasted…

Not sure what Kentucky did to blow the big lead in the second half… I was watching the UNC Vs Duke game and only saw the last five minutes of the second half… I am unsure of how a team can blow a 26 point lead to a team that is now where near as talented but Kentucky managed to do this… This type of play is what gets the fans like me frustrated…

The Florida game is huge… If Kentucky can pull off an upset here it could be monumental for the season… If they do fans please do not rush the court!!! This is Kentucky!!!

After Florida

How do you know your basketball program has taken a step back??? When the coaches and players find the positives in a big game lost and fans are proud that the team did not get blown out… UK lost!!! You lost at home for the third time this year!!!

You shot 3 of 22 from the three point line and 12 for 21 at the free throw line… You took some very ill advised shot early in the shot clock in the first half and then missed wide open looks from all over the floor in the second half… Bobby Perry sucks!!! Get him off of the court now… He is hurting the team more then he is helping at this point… At some point you just have to move on and that point has arrived…

Kentucky did play good defense the last thirty minutes of the game and should have walked away with a “W”… Hit fifteen free throws and make seven three pointers and you win by twelve points…

Randolph Morris played a great second half but he did not exist in the first half… Joe Crawford does not seem to show up against the next level of competition and he had played well in the SEC until this game… Derrick Jasper should have gotten more minutes… Meeks did not have a good game…

Five in a row to Florida is a step back for this program no matter what you think… Looks to me like a three and three finish for the Cats!!! That means win two at home and then win a road game either @ Bama, @ UT, @ Florida or @ Vandy…

I think Florida is 96 Kentucky good and will win the NCAA Championship again this year… They are solid one to five and they have a nice bench… The loss at Vandy does not change my mind...

After Tennessee

Tennessee is not that good (see box score for the USC game)… Kentucky’s inside defense was horrible and a couple of freshmen burned our experienced front line inside… Perry Stevenson played some good minutes in the crunch, Joe Crawford played the type of game I expected him to play against Florida (he plays like that against UF and UK wins by twenty), Bobby Perry sucks and he got buried on the bench last night, Smooth made two critical turnovers and also got a bad call on a charge that was not a charge when UK could have taken the lead… UT had two freshmen that killed UK…

Tubby said in the paper that he could not understand why this team panics at the ends of games and why they are so out of position on defense (he indicated that they have been out of position the last two games on almost every play)… Get you and you staff together stand in front of a mirror and then look up!!!

I am done with “Ten Loss Tubby” and I officially want a new coach… If Kentucky goes to the Final Four then I am wrong... Prove me wrong!!!

After Alabama

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!

Hey ho, Orlando must go!!! Can anyone give me one reason why UK should keep Tubby and is circle of idiots???

John Pelphrey Update

Quote from local story in South Alabama about JP:

“Can you believe that my South Alabama Jaguars are leading the Sun Belt Conference, have 20 wins and are on a 13 game winning streak? Yes! And last night they defeated Houston on the road, which is in second place in Conference USA. Say goodbye to Coach Pelphrey fellow Jaguar supporters, because a major school will be making him a deal he can’t refuse.”

Let’s hope that major school starts with K and ends with Y…

Kentucky Football

I really do not have an issue with the University raising the ticket prices but I do have issues with the reasons they are giving as to why…

Dr Todd claims that they have rebuilt the program and putting a better product on the field… Rome was not built in a day and Kentucky Football will not be built after one season (this season)… Dr Todd really shows he has no football acumen to think one successful season justifies hiring and retaining Rich Brooks… He may be lucky and be right but with the schedule this year coming up and the graduations that will occur after this year of some very significant skill positions then what happens is this teams goes a competitive 5 and 7 in 2007 (that is my prediction) and then drops a bomb and goes 3 and 9 or 4 and 8 the following year (again I think this is reality when you look at the schedule)… I hope more then anyone that I am wrong about all of this!!! If Brooksy goes 5 and 7 next year and the 4 and 8 the next do you run him??? Let’s hope UK can somehow go 7 and 5 next year…

Football finished under budget last year due to issues with attendance so they raised prices to recoup the revenue… That was due to the product that had been put on the field the previous years and people’s bitterness towards the administration and coaching staff…

I thought that is was interesting that Mitch Barnhart made no effort to speak to the fan base when the football team was honored at UT basketball game… I think overall he is doing a great job but he needs to assert himself and get out in the front… I want to see UK have an athletic director who is out front and vocal like Tom Jurich is at Louisville… Mitch has taken a beaten but will not face the challengers and he should!!! Wimp!!!

I think one of the reasons is that Mitch is not in I told you so mode with football like Dr Todd is because he is a little smarter football guy then Dr Todd… Mitch knows that next year will be a tough one for the football team and the year after that is going to be even tougher due the heavy losses this team will have after next year at the skill positions… Brooksy and Mitch are already bitching about the schedule the next two years!!! Suck it up boys, this is the SEC!!!

Kentucky had the 54th best recruiting class according to Rivals.com this week (to me that is very poor)… Ten SEC teams had better classes and four of those teams reside in the SEC East (Those four had top ten in the nation classes)… How can one compete with the likes of this in the SEC??? Damn I wish Kentucky could play football in the Big East!!!

World Series Champion St Louis Cardinals

St Louis has not made any major moves this off season yet and the starting pitchers are shaping up to be Carpenter, Mulder, Reyes, Wells and TBD??? If Izzy can come back then Wainwright is in the rotation (I hope he is)… Again with St Louis this year it will be about pitching… The offense looks solid and there still may be a trade out there they will make for another outfielder… I was disappointed for Jeff Weaver that he did not re sign with St Louis but it is not a big loss based on his overall performance… I agree with St Louis to not sign a pitcher due to his post-season performance… I believe Dave Duncan had allot to do with Weaver’s turnaround and I believe he will end up struggling in Seattle… Weaver shows that most players are not about championships but about money, as Seattle has zero chance of winning the World Series… St Louis offered him two years at about $11 million and Seattle gave him one year for $8.25 million… Remember no one but St Louis showed any interest in this guy when the Angels put him on waivers…

The offense will again be solid for the Redbirds with the anchors of Puljos and Rolen… Edmonds needs to have a better year and St Louis will need production out of Juan Encarcian for sure… I would rather see the Redbirds trade Chris Duncan but if they do not expect to see him in the outfield quite often in a platoon situation with Preston Wilson… Molina will be solid again at Catcher and Eckstein will give you 120% at all times… The revolving door of 2nd base will be played by Adam Kennedy who was traded from the Cardinals a few years back… Kennedy is allot like Eckstein…

Too early for predictions at this point but Pitchers and Catchers report today…

Random Thoughts

- I am not sure what Tubby is thinking but I saw an interview with his son Saul and he (Saul) wants to be a head coach in the NBA… Could Tubby take an NBA job and bring Saul in as his assistant??? Tubby has a one million dollar bonus in place if he is the head coach at UK on April 3rd of this year… Mark your calendars…

- Speaking of bonuses when Larry Bird decided he was going to retire he walked into the then the GM of the Celtics office, Dave Gavitt, and told him his plans… Gavitt told him he should wait a few days and think it over (He was looking out for Bird because he knew Larry would collect a several million dollar bonus in a few days if he was still on the active roster)… Bird looked at him and was quoted as saying, “Dammit Dave I know what day it is and if I ain’t going to play then I ain’t going to take the damn money!!!”

- I heard a comment on the Radio prior to the Super Bowl that said the Clubs in Miami were full of people from Chicago and that the Colts fans from Indiana were standing ten deep at the local Bob Evans…

- Rex Grossman could be the worst Super Bowl quarterback ever… He has to be a decent player to be at that level but on long passes he just throws the ball up in the air like a punter punts the ball… I noticed him doing this during the playoffs… Even Vince Ferragamo, David Woodley and Jake Delhomme gave their respective teams a chance to win the big game… Bears should trade for Lorenzon!!!

- Looks like Tiger will try to extend is PGA tour winning streak at the Match Play… He is not going to play the LA Open (Nissan) and that is the only tournament he has played in that occurs during the next month… As far as I am concerned the streak is over… He has lost twice even though these were non US PGA events… I think that Jack Nickalus will have some influence over Tiger and he will start playing the Honda Classic but that is a few years away… Tiger played well in Dubai but was beaten Henrik Stenson a person that many people think can match Tiger over the next few years… They are always looking for someone to match Tiger but I do not think that any of the golfers can match his mental frame, EVER!!!

- Duke has now lost four straight and are unranked… I have watched them play and they are not athletic enough… This is not a racist statement but they are way to white!!! Do you think that Duke fans are ready to run Coach K??? Is Duke on the downslide??? Bobby Knight has lost five in a row!!! Way to go Bobby!!! I think that Coach Knight is over rated now… Time for him to go!!!

- ShagOnGolf is off to the races in Yahoo Fantasy Golf… I am in the big pool, a pick set called Fans of Kenny Perry and one called Scuffletown Country Club with Bruce Bailey and Craig Glick… I an in first place in the SCC and in 74th in FKP and in 16,904 place overall… This gives me added incentive to watch the tournaments where I usually only set down and watch the majors…

- I read where Charlie Weis is suing some surgeons over his gastric bypass surgery and complications he has had after the surgery… Seems to me if he backed away from the buffet he would not needed the surgery in the first place…

ShagOnMusic

Sam Nation says everyone should check out The Shins… I have heard them and I like what I have heard so far… My nephew downloaded my Sonic Youth and is loving it… He is starting to get tuned in on music and I am not trying to influence him to much… He loves the new Beck CD… Did I ever tell you that I love music!!!
