BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

by ShagOnSports

Three weeks ago I was on my annual trip to Flordia for the Honda Classic PGA Golf Tournament… This was the first year the tournament was held at PGA National Golf Club, Champions Course…

Champions Course is solid… It has hosted the PGA Championship multiple times, the Senior PGA Championship (used to be every year) and has hosted a Ryder Cup… The layout was recently re done by the Golden Bear… I also played North Palm Beach Country Club which was just re done by the Golden Bear for free I might add… More on that later…

On Friday we went over to the tournament in the morning and watched several groups tee off… The nice thing about the tournament being held at PGA is my buddie Coop lives about a half mile from the course and we can just walk over and back home when we want…
On this day number one was playing into the wind and it was interesting to watch the players negotiate the conditions… Most hit hybrids either in the middle or up the right side but about one of four would take a rip at driver… The hole was about 380 yards which is very negotiable but the green had and elephant buried in the green… It was a tough one… We were only there a few hours so I did not see much of the course that day but I liked what little I saw…
On Saturday we went over to the tournament in the afternoon… We checked out hole number 10 (525 yard par 4) and watched allot of number 17 which was a 200 yard plus par three… The Bear Trap was postioned at 17 which is an area where they have some really nice public seating and they are trying to create an atmosphere like number 17 at the tournament in Scottsdale… Slammy Gibb and Rudy Rousseau decided to part at 17 for the day… Had something to do with the drinks…
Me, Coop and his son Levi spent most of the afternoon on eighteen green which is a par five… Eighteen is 605 yards and is not reachable in two by the players… No one in four days hit the green in two… I do not even think that anyone tried… After watching the groups come in I was for sure that their was going to be some high drama on eighteen on Sunday and my plan was once the leaders made the turn on Sunday was to park my butt there to watch the drama unfold…
After dinner on Saturday night we went back to Rudy’s suite at the Marriot and watched the post game on The Golf Channel… When they interviewed Boo Weekly who was set to tee of in the last group Sunday, Slammy declared he is our man because he is one of us… When they interviewed him I thought they were talking to someone from the rodeo… He talks more country then I do…
When we made it to the course on Sunday Slammy and I took off on our adventure… We walked the front nine… All the holes on the front are great holes… I really liked numbers five and number six… Five is a par three, which are really great holes to watch, and six was a long par four with a green that Jack buried another elephant in… The pin on Sunday was tucked on the left side of the green and most players would have to hit long irons into the hole… We noticed that most of the players were missing the fairway to the right… I think it was due to the way the tee box was lined up and had little to do with the water that runs down the left side of the fairway…
One thing that Slammy and I noticed is when these guys hit balls out of a decent lie in the rough is they take an extra club and hit the ball thin… They never even disturb the grass at all… That is something I am going to have to practice… All of the players now are using Hybrids where four years ago they were not using them at all… If you do not have a hybrid in your bag then you are missing the boat…
We bounced around between green number three, green number six, tee number eleven, tee number four and watched most of the groups come through green number ten… After Boo and Mark Wilson came through number 10 we walked over and watched them on eleven tee box… Wilson took out a Turkey sandwich to eat and Boo got himself a dip… After they hit their tee shots I told Sammy lets go to number 18 and watch the drama unfold…
The 605 yard par five provided plenty of drama… Local boy Brett Wettirich came through and needed a birdie to get to five under and hit one in the bunker… We saw some birdies, some great up and downs out of the bunker and some great par saves from the back of the green… We were in perfect condition for a view of the hole and the drama that was to come…
Eighteen has a nice leader board in sight so we could see when guys were making moves and falling back… With about ten groups left to come in I predicted that six under would win and five under gets you to a playoff…
With such a bunched up field the excitement was building up with each group… Wilson and Weekly were in a battle and after 16 they were tied… Seventeen green is so far away from 18 green and with the terrain in between we did not know that Boo had taken the lead with a birdie on 17 until it was posted on the board… By this time Villeagas had hit is approach shot long so he need to get up and down to stay in the tie… Jose Coceres made a nice birdie to go five under on the last hole but with Boo at six under it looked like he was a lock…
We could not see Boo’s drive or his second shot but we saw him walking to his second shot so we knew he was in the middle of the fairway… He was second to hit after Wilson was over the green…
The pin was on the left middle side of the green guarded by a bunker in front, which was getting allot of action from the groups… To me this should be an easy shot for Boo because he needed to do was go for the center of the green…
After he hit his shot it looked from his body language that he may have hit the ball in the drink… When his ball landed it was in the middle of the green, which should be an easy two putt and done…
As he was coming up to the green Slammy said you have to yell out Boo like you want to say it and not in a negative way… Everyone was pulling for BOO!!! Wilson chipped to about five fee past so now it was up to Boo to two putt… He stood over the putt and you could tell by the way he hit the putt and his immediate reaction that he was short (turned out he was 38 inches short)… Wilson makes a nice putt to save par (huge putt for him, with another to come in the playoff)…
I cannot imagine the pressue of standing over a 38 inch putt for $950,000… I would love the oppurtunity to try… I think I would have run the first putt past the hole and not have been short but who knows…
When Boo missed his putt my heart just sank…
When the four players when back for the playoff we held our spot on the 18th green… I felt for sure that someone would win the playoff on the first hole… None of the four players hit really good approach shots, two missed the green completely and the other two were on but far from the hole…
Once everyone was on the green Marc Wilson had a twenty-five foot putt for the win… He drained it!!! At that point we could not figure out how come the other three players putted out… As we were walking back to Coops someone told us that Wilson had hit his drive in the rough and had to punch out so his long putt was for par… Mystery solved…
The NCAA Tournament
- Duke is out!!! How does one compare Duke to Kentucky the last two years… Do you think that people in Durham would like to see Coach K go??? First upset of the tournamnet… CBS is making excuses for them already… Duke is just to white as I stated in an earlier Blog… Now I need UNC to get beat…
- Glad to see Bobby Knight out in the first round…
- I had Marquette (Stupid Pick) in my main pool but I did pick MSU in my upset bracket… Lost Davidson in the upset bracket…
- I had Texas upsetting UNC to go to the Final Four… My bracket is in shambles unless USC can go to the final four…
- Ohio State and Xavier was one hell of a game…
- CBS coverage of the tournament is just awful… The split screens, the look ins, Jim Nantz must have naked pictures of someone at CBS… He has to be the worst play by play guy ever… Give me Bob Costas any day over Nantz…

- Vandy could upset Gtown, USC could beat UNC and I look for Vegas to beat Oregon State… Should be a good weekend for basketball… I do not think Tennessee will beat Ohio State but allot of people are picking that upset… I think Memphis, Kansa and UCLA win… My pick is still Florida to repeat…

Fantasy Baseball
The ShagOnSports league is set with twelve teams… The league has a nice mix of people and I set the scoring up to reward for offense (hits, home runs, rbi’s, sb, walks, hpb, steals) and take away points for errors, caught stealing and strikeouts… The pitching categories are set for wins, losses, saves, shoutouts, complete games, k’s, and earned runs… The final roster are to be set this Saturday… Right now there are allot of trade options out there… I was able to get several players I wanted, Carlos Beltran, Ichiro, Victor Martinez, Adam Harang, Billy Wagner, Brad Lidge, Mariano Rivera, Ivan Rodreguiz and Barry Zito… I have five closers…

Random Thoughts
- Coops son Levi got hit with a ball in the thigh on the fly the final sunday… Coop said he never batted and eye… Levi is a tough cookie and Levi loves golf like we all love golf… It is so cool that Coops kids are old enough to hang out with us… Levi and Lucas went with us to dinner on Saturday night and we were able to teach them a few guy things…

- Not very good news out of Lexington for football… The Johnson brothers are on academic probation, Ben McGrath quit the team (he was one of my favorite players) and highly touted lineman Micah Jones is giving up football due to injuries… The recruiting class ended up at 54th overall… I am foaming out that mouth for football to start but I can wait… Allot of golf to play between now and then though…

- I am sitting here watching John Pelphry’s team right now beat Syracuse… I really like the style that his team plays… I wish that UK would bring him in as the number one assistant and heir apparent for next year… This guy really deserves to be the UK coach at some point…

- Speaking of Johnny P… Mark and Leslie Sheets are going to have a boy… The name I suggested was John Pelphrey Sheets… They like Claiborne Sheets which is a really cool name… Just as long as he is not Claiborne Curry Sheets…

- Kentukcy has four assistant coaches… One to fill out the line up card and three to check and make sure it is right…

- Boo Weekly got a penalty this weekend at the AP Invitational that he did not know was a two shot penalty but I did… If a ball is in play on the green and rolling towards the pin (which was not requested to be tended and the opposing player or opposing caddy pulls the pin out that is a two stroke penalty on the opposing player… Boo’s playing partner did this last week and Boo rushed to the pin and yanked the pin out thinking he had saved the player from a two shot penalty… Also If you you move a cart or a bag that is possibly going to be hit with a ball in the air then it is a two stoke penalty on the person who moved the object…

- During the Honda Classic eventual winner Marc Wilson’s caddy cost Wilson two shots on Saturday because he told the opposing player what degree of loft was on a hybrid club Wilson had just hit… That is also a two shot penalty because it is against the rules to give another player advice… Think about that the next time you are on the tee and someone asks you what club you just hit…
- I had an MRI on my ailing shoulder today in another effort to find out what is wrong... I pretty much played golf in Florida with one arm and still broke 90 both days... We played North Palm Beach Country Club and it was just re done by Jack Nickalus... I really want to play it when I am healthy... I am hoping they find something wrong and this injury is corrected...

· Mara and I went to see TV on the Radio last Friday night… They were pretty good… The warm up band was Subtle (check them on the internet) and they were really cool… Not for everyone but good… I bought the latest Muse CD… I also bought Chappel Season Two and Caddyshack on DVD…
