It has been a long hot summer

My summer kicked off with shoulder surgery in late May… It was a tough recovery period but I returned to work after four weeks and two days off and two months later (last week) the Surgeon released me to start working out with weights and do some stronger rehabilitation… I am still very weak in my right shoulder but the pain I was having is gone so I am ready to get rolling… I will not be able to play golf until April of next year after my winter of rehabilitation…

I was able to complete by Project Management Certification (big for my career stuff) and now my focus at work is getting the project I have been working on for the last year off of the ground… I am currently working six and seven days a week and this will continue through the end of the year barring any delays to my project… This project is really cool as it is a totally automated warehouse for order processing and we will have the capability of processing about 50,000 orders a day at peak capacity… When this is done I am going to ready to try something different…

This summer we installed new front and back doors our house, a new HVAC unit (if you have not priced them lately then be prepared for some sticker shock) and my wife painted the living room and dining room along with all the trim work on our main floor… Last weekend we pulled up all the carpet in anticipation of getting new wooden floors in those rooms and our main floor hallway the Monday after Labor Day… We have some cosmetic things to do after that but all the major things are done for now…

We have attended many Louisville Bats games this year and made a trip to Cincy to see Reds and Cardinals in July (Reds whipped them)…

Summer All Stars Tour

Back in July one of my childhood friends, Joey Jameson, brought his 11 year old all stars from Henderson to the Kentucky State Tournament… I was able to watch them play three games, which included a trip to the Championship Game…

The quality of baseball by all of these teams was incredible… Joey and another friend of mine Daniel Woodard did a nice job of coaching the team and I am very proud of my friends for the way they conducted themselves… They were great with the kids and you could see they spent allot of times on fundamentals… Although they lost in the Championship Game they represented themselves well…

Another Henderson Team made it all the way to the Babe Ruth All Stars National Championship Game… This team contained two friends of mine kids Dylan Bailey, son of Bruce and Dylan Peters, son of Mark…

After being eliminated in the championship of the State Tournament this team received a special invite to the regional championship after a team from Indiana was unable to participate in the tournament… The team took full advantage of the opportunity by winning the regional, then winning there pool play at the World Series before falling in the Championship Game to a team from New York…

What great memories for these kids and their parents…

St Louis Cardinals

The Redbirds are in the pennant race but overall it has been a difficult season… The off-season was not kind as they failed to sign an outfielder and they failed to retain Jeff Suppan or Jeff Weaver and made a mistake by re-signing Jim Edmunds and Mark Mulder… After all of that they are just an injury away from leading the division which is where they would be had Chris Carpenter not gotten hurt…

The National League Central is weak but St Louis proved last year that if you can get into the playoffs and get hot anything could happen… The Redbirds have now lost Juan Encarcian and Scott Rolen for the year and a key pick up last year Preston Wilson is out for the year also… Adam Kennedy is also on the DL…

My prediction is the Red Sox will win the World Series but watch out for the Yankees or Tigers if they make the playoffs as they have the pitching to make a run…

Kentucky Football (before EKU)

The first game is coming up this weekend… This is as excited I have been about UK Football since the year Brooks took over (that was a team that should have gone to a bowl game)…

I am still not drinking the Rich Brooks kool-aid like most… I believe the biggest turnaround for last years team was quarterbacks coach Randy Sanders influence on Andre Woodson and a favorable schedule… Woodson has always had the talent and Sanders brought that talent out so without that combination and the schedule I do not think that UK would have had the success they experienced last year… Rich can win me over by just repeating what he did last year… I will take 8 and 5 with a bowl win…

I am not sure if Kentucky’s schedule is ranked the toughest but I know that no other team in the country has the amount of pre-season ranked teams on its schedule as Kentucky does this year (six total)… They traded in Ole Miss and got Arkansas (on the road) and with conference games against Florida, LSU, Tennessee at Georgia, at South Carolina and at Vandy and non conference home games against Louisville and a good Kent State squad a repeat of last year is going to be tough…

Would I rather see Kentucky play in a weak conference and play a weak schedule and compete for a National Championship??? No, but……. It would be nice if Kentucky could take a hiatus from the SEC schedule for three for four years, schedule a bunch of chumps, run up some wins and then go back to the SEC… The caveat for this year is when Kentucky has a breakthrough year it will be against the best and most competitive football conference in the country… This is a golden opportunity for this program and I hope the old man and players can take advantage of it… College football is too important to the Athletic Department Budget and I believe the days of Kentucky not competing in the SEC are gone… They will not be a year in year out good team like Florida, Georgia and Tennessee every year due to years of youth and strength of schedule but they will compete…

Old Brooksy just may have Kentucky on the right path… As I stated he needs to have at a minimum had a repeat of last year… They need to beat EKU, Mississippi State, Florida International (watch out for Howard) and Kent State and then win three out of the four with Arkansas, South Carolina, Vandy and Louisville… This team has confidence and confidence can be a great thing or a dangerous thing which could lead to some marquee upsets…

Kentucky lacks depth in two major areas… Both the offensive line and defensive line already have some injury hits… The defense has some great talent and to overcome this lack of depth they will need their linebackers led by Wesley Woodyard and Braxton Kelley to step up along with Micah Johnson and Johnny Williams… I look for this defense to play with the same abandon they played with the last two games of the year last year and they will need to create the level of turnovers they did in 2006 to overcome the depth issues… They have to show major improvements over last year…

On offense they can overcome the depth issues with talent… This UK team has weapons with Woodson, Burton, Tamme, Little, Dixon, Ford and Lyons at the skill positions and with some choice play calling can be one of the most potent offenses in the country even with the tough schedule… They have potential for three to four first team all SEC performers…

Let’s play some football…

After the EKU Game

The offense performed as expected… I did not see them run the ball up the middle much at all which concerns me… Everything seemed to be outside of the tackles and that speaks for the team speed… They need to be able to run the ball up the middle… I was disappointed that Woodson got sacked twice although once I think was his issue…

The defense did what they should against Eastern… They really shut them down but they ended up giving up a touchdown after a fumbled punt… The interior line did not get allot of penetration but I thought the ends played well… The linebackers and the secondary played well but the secondary has some hits on injuries so we will see how this plays out over the next two weeks… The ends and the linebackers are going to have to play big against Kent State’s option read offense (this is what UK struggles with each year)…

The kicking game was trash… That has to be addressed… That was five points that was given up by the kicker and to pull upsets UK will need those five points… They were all just dead misses… Let the freshmen from Trinity kick!!!

My player of the game was Alfonso Smith… He is a demon on special teams and pretty good as a 3rd string tailback…

UK played without making allot of mistakes which is good for an early season game… This weekend will be a big test for this team…

ShagOnSports Random Thoughts

- UK basketball has twenty home games this year… This is a good set up for Coach Billy G to get this team going this year… The home schedule is not the greatest but the overall schedule is a good one… The SEC has some great overall talent so the conference schedule will be tough…

- Billy D is back after a short stint in Orlando… What the hell was he thinking??? Can he win another Championship at Florida in the next ten years??? My vote is no… His run is over for now…

- After winning the first half of the ShagOnGolf Fantasy League the team called RubberSoul has thoroughly knocked me around in the second half (He is in first place in our Fans of Kenny Perry Group for the second half and 15th overall)… Unfortunately RubberSoul has struggled (he had only one player make the weekend due to missed cuts and wd’s) this weekend and lost his strongholds… With a big two weeks I could still push past him and win the overall title in our group…

- I am in second place in the ShagOnBaseball League… My team struggled early then worked my way up to first place for a couple of weeks… I am about 160 points out of first after last night but a made a bone head play and forgot to put one of my pitchers in for the night… He pitched a complete game shut out and struck out eight, which would have been worth twenty points total… That could come back to haunt me…

- Off to a good start in picking College Football… In Fans of Kentucky I am in First place and in Fans from Kentucky fifth place (15 of 19 correct)… In the ShagOnFootball League I am in first but with only 13 of 19 correct (I switched it up a little)… No, I did not pick Appalachian State to cover against Michigan…

- I entered an open league on Yahoo for Fantasy Pro Football for the first time… I still will not watch much Pro but it will give me some insight into the players… Very simple league with limited rosters…

- They are calling the Appy State upset the biggest ever… ESPN had listed Centre College’s victory over Harvard (C6H0) in 1921 as the biggest ever until now… Centre won the mythical National Championship in 1921… Appy State is pretty damn good and would beat allot of teams in Division one… Lloyd Carr is done!!!

- Rich Brooks needs to quit dyeing his hair… Looks awful!!!

ShagOnMusic

We got to see The Police live at Churchill Downs this summer and will see The Killers and Tori Amos in the next month… There is some really great new music out there including Interpol, Brand New and Social Distortion... I have completely sworn off conventional radio and listen to nothing but Satellite Radio now (for $.40 cents per day you get music with no commercials and almost all Sports Programs as well as news talk, etc)…
